this will never happen. the vote is just there to make PR think it has a choice. u really think the USA gonna let PR decide somethin like this? US already has all they need from PR the way things are. Going thru with this would be idiotic on the US part to inherit a crime n poverty rate like this. If this happens there is definitely a reason other than the outcome of a vote.

pretty much, i have no idea why people are celebrating, the politics of this is crazy, the chances of this happening any time soon are about zero, maybe 50 years from now it could happen but right now no way, first republicans would never allow it, second any black person or black politician that supports PR becoming a state before DC is retarded, then the whole issue of VI, guam and other territories will also spring up, then congress itself can impose conditions on PR that can easily make it unpalatable for some people including pr residents ( i dont know if any of yall remember a story a few months ago about a mexican lady in arizona that got taken off a ballot for not knowing english, it turned out that when arizona was made a state congress demanded the AZ constitution say that all elected official speak english)

so its basically a minefield that will probably make it so that there will never be a simple up or down vote

How is Puerto Rico doing economically?
Kind of sucky... mas o menos.

Puerto Ricans had median household income of $18,314 for 2009, which makes Puerto Rico's economy comparable to the independent nations of Latvia or Poland. By comparison, the poorest state of the Union, Mississippi, had median household income of $36,646 in 2009. Nevertheless, Puerto Rico's GDP per capita compares favorably to other independent Caribbean nations, and is one of the highest in North America.

there is no way republicans will let a non english speaking territory into the country, this isnt some simple up or down vote, its a political minefield

i didnt say dc was gonna be a state, im just saying DC has been trying to become a state, so if PR tries to skip ahead of DC people would have a problem with that, especially in the black community

i personally would have a problem with it and so would any politically aware black person

the whole issue of statehood is a minefield, DC is just one of them

Damn, I'm surprised you aren't aware of the history behind these things.

DC was DESIGNED not to belong to any particular state so as to not have any influence on the capital. They just didn't forsee so many people moving to the city limits for any reason outside of government matters.

Puerto Rico on the other hand is a different beast. Oh, and by the way, Puerto Rico is full of black people as well.

lol, i know the history, im explaining the politics, DC statehood is a huge issue in DC and in black politics, and its an issue in the capitol because technically congress controls DC, so inside the beltway everybody is aware of the issue, i guess people didn't know that, but now you do, but DC been had next

but the chances of DC becoming a state are slim, which means the chances of any other territory becoming a state are slimmer
