I usually put Big L in the same category as Biggie; both gone too soon.
Great talents, but not enough material to make some of the comparisons they get.

doe or die is one of the best rap albums ever made, and better than any big l album, but i'm real tired of these new jacks trying to slander l's name. dude wasn't one dimensional by any means, and if you want to step up to the plate, i'll sit here and list plenty of conciensce/storytelling songs that dude did, that never got released, considering that he was killed too early. when one of the greatest rappers ever(lord finesse), stops rapping because you were killed, you know that you were nice with it. it's the same thing that happened with eric clapton, when jimi hendrix died. if you don't feel like you have any competition, you aren't going to have that drive, to do what you love. l did multi's so effortlessly, you couldn't even tell, and on top of that, he had the pucnline game on lock. flow was nice as hell too. alot of these rappers should be grateful that l never got to make it to the mainstream through rocafella, cause he would've had the game on smash. there's never been another underground rapper with his kind of charisma and style, since he's passed.
az? dude is one of the greatest to ever do it. one of the top flows and lyricist of all time. i honestly can't decide, when it comes to straight skill.

This one's close and it's hard to compare the two because they're different types of artists.

Big L had more catch your attention type bars and verses, while AZ had more substance and depth along with an ill flow with his bars and verses.

I'm a big fan of both, but it really depend on what prefer from an emcee. I think AZ is better overall, but L is more dynamic with his due to the punchlines. AZ has at least one classic or borderline classic album, while L mainly just has a bunch of dope records. His first album was good, but it wasn't a classic and it didn't age as well as Doe or Die did.
