I mean, the fukkery coming from it would be enjoyable. For me, it proves that Bryan Alvarez was 100 per cent correct: WWE only cares about heat and nothing else. And ironically the one guy they don't want to have heat has the most heat in the company!

If they trademarked his old name, that they're not going to use, that was to prevent him from using it in the Indies.

They may just be cutting bait, getting a big match out of the end of his contract, while also showing thanks and sending him on his way.
