Not a gang member but my whole neighborhood was full of them.

Back in the day (80s/90s) there were lots of gang members who never used a gun. There were shooters who had the guns, and there other guys who didn't have their own guns but who were willing or forced to use one in certain circumstances and would get it from the shooter. But plenty other guys for which that situation never arose.

That was back in the day though, seems like there are more guns around than there used to be so I dunno what the situation is.
