Pistons.
They would have been even better if Larry Brown wouldn't have quit
The media likes to proclaim both of these teams as dynasties
But between these two teams which one do you think was the better group and had the better run?
Pistons: 1 Championship, 2 NBA Finals Appearances, 6 Eastern Conference Finals Appearances
Celtics: 1 Championship, 2 NBA Finals Appearances, 3 Eastern Conference Finals Appearances
Not to many teams beating that 04 Pistons team. You got Sheed at his peak and actually playing like it. Ben at his peak. Chauncey and Rip doing their thing and nice depth. I think people sleep on how good they were because they basically sleepwalked through that last 4 years. If anybody underachieved it was them. Boston just go fukked over by injuries. Due to those injuries no one had them going to the Finals in 2010 or making it to the ECF game 7 this year. Irony of course being that injuries were partially responsible for them making it that far this year.
Back in 04, once the Pistons acquired Sheed, the Pistons were practically unbeatable. In that 04 playoff run, I think they held the high scoring Nets to under 70 points. That's how good that squad was. But, in hindsight was that the East was still weak and it really didn't start to heat up and get better once the Big 3 in Boston came to town. You can make an argue that both squads underachieved, but imo the Celtics should have made more than 2 finals appearance. The Pistons could have and should have beat the Spurs in 05, but Sheed completely had a mental mistake and cost them that game in the finals at the Palace that they should have won. But, as good as the Pistons squad was once they acquired Sheed, but the Celtics were so ill because they acquired KG and Ray while they were both in their primes still, and they had a really good supporting cast. Both teams had some really good runs, and were both responsible for helping and making the East much more competitive and better too.
Was the East for Boston really that much stronger if at all? Their only comp before the Heat landed Bron and Bosh was the Lebron and some nikkas Cavs and the Dwight and some nikkas Magic and of course the Pistons. They went to 7 with the Magic with KG out. Pistons had to deal with the Heat who at least managed to win a championship as well as the Nets and people forget about that Pacers squad before the brawl. The Heat were just plain better than the Cs this year as well as last year. The Lakers were just better in 2010. I can't honestly say that the Heat in 06, or Cavs in 07 were just plain better that the Pistons. Losing to inferior teams is the definition of underachieving.
I wouldn't say the East got significantly better, but when the big 3 arrived in Boston, it changed the East much more than when Sheed came to the Pistons imo. We could never tell about the Pacers squad because it never happened, but I think they would have beat the Heat or Pistons in the 05 playoffs, but Artest was out. And honestly, yea the Heat won the championship, but it is widely regarded and questioned if the Heat "really won" the finals. But, IIRC, the regular season records of the Magic and Cav's during the big 3 run was much better than the Pistons, Heat, and Pacers records in the mid 2000s. I wouldn't say that both teams lost to inferior teams really. Like if KG would have played in the 09 playoffs, I see them going to the finals, but with KG out, the C's lost there best defensive anchor, and imo the best player on the C's in 2008, so it wasn't a surprise really when they lost to the Magic. And the Pistons when they went to the ECF from 04-08, when they won, they were the better team easily, but when they lost, it wasn't like they lost to an inferior team or anything like that imo.
No one calls any of these teams dinasties
