This is the coli

Bow wow first album is better than any Jay album on here :russ:

I mean we could play that game but a lot of us were around to see that album catapult X to superstardom. A good rule of thumb is who were people rocking with more in real time

If reasonable doubt was forgettable No
Vo1 was trash No
Vol 2 overrated Yes

how did Jay get the spot over Nas, Wu, X, Mase etc…

all these guys sold more and people loved their music off the rip. How did Jay get that spot with a mediocre catalog?

@FreshAIG @SunZoo can one of y’all break this down

Is anyone really saying RD is forgettable besides maybe one or two posters? I think mostly everyone in this thread is acknowledging its a dope album. My favorite Jay album personally...but we also gotta acknowledge how X "caught lighter fluid" in 98

All those albums range from classic to good. Jay's consistency in quality albums from 96-03 is incredible. Especially considering he dropped every single year. He arguably dropped 4 classics in the span of 8 years (RD, Volume 2, BP, BA).

I don’t see anyone disputing this either. nikka is creating arguments just to give Jay props.

How did Jay become the guy in 98 and beyond?

I mean it's a lot of factors. If we're looking strictly from why Jay was the most commercially successful for the longest over X, Nas, Mase, and Wu? As someone else mentioned X gave him competition from 98-01 until his personal problems took him out. Nas did too, but was mismanaged by Columbia IMO and then deliberately went anti-commercial in the mid-00's (but still sold well regardless). Mase's second album was trash and then he quit to go become a preacher. Wu is a grimy group as opposed to one rapper, not all 10 of them can be that big dog status, and as the game became more about that commercial club style that grimier style wasn't gonna be for the mainstream. Plus they had internal disagreements and beef and couldn't see eye to eye on their direction. Jay putting an album out every year also probably helped. He focused on hit club singles and stayed in the public's consciousness while not over-saturating himself (which is a hard thing to do).

This right here. Same psychology again and again. Exaggerate any criticism or skepticism to dismiss it as ridiculous, then act like it was just an accepted fact Jay was the best. Nobody thought DMX or Nas or whoever else was as nicer than Jay except a few delusional stans

When X said he was gon shoot the crown off jay head. X just sold 5 million. So that’s not a reason at all

98 was the only year Nas didn’t have a project but even then he made a movie.

X said that in 01, so was still Jay's competition. After 01 his personal problems took him out.

EDIT: Actually maybe it was a bit after 01, maybe more like 03 cuz X had a couple more big hits. After 03 it was a wrap though.

U the most unbiased person on this site. Ur opinion is the most respected

I understand preference but if u are a unbiased hiphop head this is a laughable thread. I love it’s Dark, but it’s levels to this shyt.

Preciate that fam, I try to be objective and also admit bias is inherent, that's the only way to do it.
