i've been using an evo 840, 250 gig ssd as my main HD for a while now.
just got an 860, 1 tb ssd and successfully cloned my old one onto it and set it as my primary boot.

now i want to wipe my old 840 so i can use it for storage.
what is the best way to do this?

in disc management, my old ssd shows as disk 0 and my new one shows up as disk 1.

this is what it looks like:

why is there no "unallocated" on my new ssd?
you don't want "unallocated" because that means that disk space hasn't been assigned to a drive

in disc manager you want to use the option to "extend volume" on your D: drive, to use up that unallocated space

cool, did that and freed up more space.
now i want to wipe it so that i can use it for storage.
do i need to format it?

first confirm that it is booting off the new drive

like I said before, the best thing would be use the "Samsung Magician" software. that can wipe erase the drive, plus you can check if that drive has the latest firmware (might as well do that while it's empty), and that you have whatever speedy options enabled

but yeah, you can just use Windows to format it

I heard wiping is no good for ssd
because of the way Trim works, "wiping" a SSD isn't really necessary. you can really just manually delete everything on it, and be done

the Samsung Magician software has a "Secure Erase" option

i had a really old version of magician so the erase function was fukking up.
it said that my ssd was frozen and instructed me to unplug my ssd for a few seconds and then plug it back in.

i wound up doing it through windows and then dl'ing the newest version of magician.

all is good.

I always say getting an SSD is the cheapest upgrade that will give you the most noticeable results
