Some cops do paper work all day....some cops write tickets....some cops walk the beat........some cops do homicide......some cops do domestic violence..etc.....so it really depends on what you do within the police service but you're kinda right you rarely hear about cops being killed. Generally I think that even the worst criminals are wayy too shook to even attempt to murder a police officer. Usually cops go down because of some type of accident.
My brother is a cop and he's done all those things at some point....he's had to draw his gun maybe once per year but he hasn't had to shoot or tazer anybody. Hes had to run people down though and he ruffs up people on a regular basis and gets away with it. Now he works the club district in Toronto and just deals with drunken fights, robberies and street brawls all night.

I wouldnt want to be a cop, it would mess with your view of the world and most people hate you. My boss' son is a cop and I always feel afraid when he comes around even though I have nothing to hide.
Canadian cops and mounties don't count.
