Before the Internet where did cats get their drum kits from?

Always wondered this.

Today you got every drum sound available for download, but before this how could you build up a library? Cats were chopping the hell out records that much?

Yep chopping records, and using beat machines. Also they would do live drum recording. They would achieve that by hiring a session drummer.

Yep, diggin and choppin. Adjusting the attack, sustain, delay and release, layering, adding eq, filtering and reverb. That's how cats created "signature" drums. These "kits" are often just samples, some not even clean like a dre snare that still has a millisecond of another sound / instrument ripped from still d.r.e or gin and juice.

Remember, back in cats didn't always have a drum set or afford a live drummer or studio time or even have music fundamentals so they sampled breaks.

People used to get floppies and zips through the mail...you would go in the back of the source and order them. My guy Copywrite got some a long time ago from one of his dudes.

Vinyl for sure! I still chop samples and breaks. Always on the hunt for new breaks and drum sounds. People used to sample 808's from the actual drum machine as well and layer that with other sounds. Drum machines came with sounds that were on floppies as stated above
