It took 35 years, multiple national championships and several records to be broken before Joe Paterno got his statue and you see what has happened to that.
SAS made some great points on First Take this morning (can't remember the last time I typed or said that) -- when you give someone an award or an honor, like the Heisman Trophy or a spot in the school's Hall of Fame, you're rewarding them for what they did on the field. When you put up a statue, you're taking a chance on the character of that person. Just imagine if Jerry Sandusky or OJ Simpson or Lance Armstrong (he actually has one that is still up
) got statues put up when they were in good standing with their respective organizations and universities. I saw the public outcry for JoePa's statue to be torn down and it sucked and it will happen again.
People will always put those with statues in the highest standing and under intense scrutiny if anything goes wrong. Not saying RG3 is a bad guy whatsoever, but I'd have to let his career and life, in general, go a bit further down the road before I would think about a statue for him.
