I get your point but adding a racial element to anything always steps up the alarm bells for many reasons, mostly historic. Murders happen everyday but the one which happened to be a hate crime will naturally be the one which is reported on more and cause the most reaction. Since all it took was the persons skin color to provoke the killing.
Same analogy can be used here
