Basquiat Painting, 'Dustheads,' Fetches Record $48.8 Million At Christie's Auction In New York (PHOTO)

NEW YORK — A Jean-Michel Basquiat (zhahn mee-SHEHL' BAH'-skee-aht) painting has set a new auction record for the graffiti artist at a sale of postwar and contemporary art in New York.

Christie's says "Dustheads" sold for $48.8 million on Wednesday.

His "Untitled," a painting of a black fisherman, held the previous record when it sold for $26.4 million last November.

Also breaking world auction prices for artists were works by Roy Lichtenstein and Jackson Pollock.

Lichtenstein's "Woman With Flowered Hat" fetched $56 million. A classic example of pop art, the 1963 painting is based on Pablo Picasso's portrait of his lover Dora Maar.

An important drip painting by Pollock, "Number 19," realized a record $58.3 million.

Christie's says Wednesday's auction brought in $495 million, the highest total at any art auction.

48 million could have saved lives of starving children but instead people are buying drawings that look like they were made by kindergardeners.

I think these paintings sell so well because they show the ugliness of the righteousness that demons try to portray. Like ultimately their righteousness is phony, and ugly, like Jean Michels artwork.

Its so demonic, friends.

boggles the mind. What makes one painting good and another bad. If I just saw this painting I would never think it was worth that much. How do you even get people to think it's worth that much? Who co signed this person way back in the day that others would pay this much?
