Broner doesn't always get the respect he deserves because of his clown-prince demeanor. But what did the ease in which he outboxed John Molina Jr. in March show you about his true skillset?

"It actually showed me what I already knew, which is that he could box and box very well. When he fought Marcos Maidana, it was almost like, 'Why are you doing this? Why aren't you doing what you need to be doing?' So I don't know what was going through his mind at the time, but obviously he went to the drawing board and fixed it and he had a great showing against Molina.

A clash of styles, a clash of substance in Adrien Broner vs Shawn Porter
Jun 17, 2015 By Jason Scavone

There’s far more than 200-some-odd miles of Interstate 71 between Akron, Ohio, and Cincinnati that separate Shawn Porter and Adrien Broner.

Porter-Broner-Styles.jpg

Shawn Porter is unlikely to be rocking an "SP" necklace anytime soon.

Brash and flash, Broner is the spiritual heir of fighters like Jack Johnson and Hector "Macho” Camacho, with a big mouth and an even bigger appetite for fame, money and prestige. Porter falls on the other spectrum of boxing archetypes, much in the way of Floyd Patterson and Manny Pacquiao: as soft-spoken and humble outside the ring as he is ferocious inside it.

Adrien Broner’s swagger is manifest when he does things like showing up late to a press conference, claiming he needed to pick up a new Gucci shirt first. But the true difference between the two fighters is revealed in Shawn Porter’s unwillingness to engage with Broner’s world-class trolling attempts.

“That’s the part that I don’t really pay attention to,” Porter said. “I pay attention to the fighter. He’s very skillful, very talented. He’s been doing this for a long time. I think the [sparring] I got with [140-pound contender] Hank Lundy, with the quick counters he was able to throw, the off-balance shots, everything he presented in the ring is a lot of what I’ll be seeing in the fight against Broner. That’s what I pay attention to, what he can do in the ring.”

What Broner is capable of in the ring come Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, airing live on NBC at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT, is readily apparent. Although they hail from different parts of Ohio, Akron native Porter had to spend quite a bit of time around Cincinnati as an amateur in order to secure the best competition. Broner was fighting in lighter divisions, but the two are familiar with each other from those years.

And what Porter saw wasn’t anything surprising or unfamiliar.

“I have an understanding of Broner and what he has,” Porter said. “I’m from the same state as Broner, so I’ve seen all those guys. I’ve seen that style a million times. I know what it is. I know the speed. I know the quickness. I know that jazzy style he has. All the way around Ohio we’re known for being fast, we’re known for not stopping and we’re known for having somewhat of a finesse style. The great part of it is, I’ve seen it all around the world. I’ve taken a little bit from everybody, so it won’t be anything new to me.”

Not only did Porter, 27, get an up-close-and-personal look at a developing Broner early on, but he has seen the man Broner, 25, has become in the ring. When Broner took on John Molina Jr. at the MGM on March 7, he controlled the action for 12 rounds.

From the get-go, it was apparent that Broner’s speed and footwork stymied Molina’s efforts to get in close and land his best weapon, a heavy right. That fight, though, gave Porter ample opportunity to scout out his Buckeye counterpart up close.

“Molina, even though he saw [Broner’s style] and was preparing for it, once he got in the ring, it was foreign to him,” Porter said. “It’s not foreign to me. Someone with fast hands with a quick, fast jab, I’ll figure it out and I’ll get around it. Molina just didn’t do enough. He wasn’t able to do enough. Me and Molina are very different. My feet are quicker and my hands are quicker. I can do what it takes to keep a guy off-balance and not get into his rhythm. That’s exactly what Molina didn't do. He let Broner get settled in, and I’m not going to do that.”

One way Porter can stop Broner from getting into a rhythm is by using his natural size advantage. Porter is listed as being the slightly taller fighter at 5 feet 7 inches, but he’s a bigger physical presence, spending more time at 147 pounds than Broner, although the two will be fighting Saturday at a catchweight of 144 pounds.

The other way Porter can stop Broner? Well, let’s just say that anyone who watched Porter tear into Erick Bone on March 13 saw a very different type of fighter than the balletic, elusive technician that Broner was against Molina.

“I’ve always been bigger than him,” Porter said. “A lot of people are looking at that to play a major factor in this fight. I’m looking at it to play its role, but I’m not looking to come in there and say ‘Oh I’m bigger than you. I’m going to wear you down, I’m going to knock you out.’ When it’s time to lay on him, when it’s time to get physical, that’s when it will show up. It has to be rough. That’s the only way to get him uncomfortable.”

Despite interest from back home, it's business as usual for Shawn Porter
Jun 18, 2015 By Jason Scavone

Cheer up, Ohio sports fans. Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is one of the top hitters in baseball. Todd Frazier and Joey Votto are both mashing again for the Reds. The Browns … uh … have incredibly orange uniforms.

Shawn-Porter-Moment_1.jpg

Shawn Porter took care of business against Erick Bone, and now it's business as usual with the heavy interest from his home state of Ohio.

And Shawn Porter will take on Adrien Broner on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, live on NBC (8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT).

“It’s always been Cleveland vs. Cincinnati,” Porter says. “We’ve done it from fight shows to tournaments, the whole nine yards. Everyone back home knows who I am, and they all know who Broner is. They’ve literally seen us grow up even though we didn’t fight each other, but they watched both of us. This is definitely a treat for everyone back home in Ohio.”

The Buckeye State will be tuning in, while Porter is trying to tune everything else out. No time to mourn for his Cavaliers. No time to indulge the fans from back home looking to get face time in Las Vegas during fight week.

“I’ve had numerous phone calls, people coming out, all that kind of stuff,” Porter says. “I ignore it. At the end of the day, it’s my life, my career. I’m the one who has to get in the ring and get the job done.”

Afterward, Porter says, he can worry about what it all means for the state. Bragging rights can’t come till after the deal is done. In the meantime, though, Northeast Ohio could use a little pick-me-up right now. The high of those extra-orange Browns uniforms might not carry the area through until fall, unless the Indians’ pitching staff leads the Tribe into the playoffs. ... So, when do the Cavs start playing again?

“That part of it, I’ll be proud of once it’s all over,” Porter says of representing the region. “Leading up to it, it’s just us. Team Porter. That’s it.”

Adrien Broner considers himself ‘The Problem’ that Shawn Porter can’t solve
Jun 18, 2015 By Jason Bracelin

Adrien Broner’s talking about what Adrien Broner’s going to do to anyone who gets in the ring with Adrien Broner.

Broner-gym2_0.jpg

Adrien Broner trains earlier this week in Las Vegas under the watchful eye of ‘big bro’ Floyd Mayweather Jr.

We say “anyone,” because getting Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) to speak specifically in strategic terms about an upcoming opponent is almost besides the point—right up there with non-alcoholic beer or a stripper’s fluency in macroeconomics.

It’s not that Broner won’t go there—he’ll answer any questions he’s asked, frequently in the third person, his words like the money in his pocket: there to be spent immodestly.

It’s just that in Broner’s mind, when a fighter gets in the ring with him, they cease to be themselves and their game plan goes right out the window, Birdman-style.

From this perspective, breaking down the scouting report on a given opponent is like attempting to pay your bar tab with Monopoly money: There’s just not a whole lot of practical value involved.

Broner applies this same line of reasoning to his next challenger, fellow Ohioan Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs), speaking in terms as unsparing as his demeanor is in the ring.

“Listen, whatever this (word that rhymes with ‘witch’) brings to the table, we’re going to be ready for,” Broner says, shirt off, bravado on, as he holds court in the locker room at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas after a recent training session.

“When fighters get in the presence of Adrien Broner, they don’t do what they usually do— just like they thought (John) Molina was going to come forward and do what he usually does to fighters,” he continues, referencing his previous fight, a lopsided decision win over a flummoxed Molina, whose offense was a like a wet match that he could never ignite. “I believe [Porter] is going to be the same way.”

Broner’s trainer, Mike Stafford, a sharp-eyed, genial man who speaks with offhanded gravitas, echoes this sentiment.

“My motto is ‘Let Adrien be Adrien,’” he says. “It’s what we do that’s going to count. It’s not what Shawn’s going to do. They have to adjust to us.”

Still, there is at least one significant adjustment for Broner, as he’ll be moving up in weight to fight the larger Porter at 144 pounds.

Broner’s fought at 147 pounds before, winning a title against Paulie Malignaggi in June 2013 before losing it six months later against Marcos Maidana.

But since then, he’s fought at 140 pounds, winning three fights in a row.

Porter, who campaigned at 154 pounds early in his career and turned pro at 160, has a natural size advantage over Broner, which Stafford says they’re accounting for.

“Obviously we want a stronger Adrien because he’s going up in weight,” Stafford explains. “We’re going to bring more power because we’re fighting the bigger man.”

If Porter is bigger in stature, Broner compensates with outsize personality.

In the Mayweather Boxing Club locker room, he’s a pendulum of emotion, speaking softly and thoughtfully one moment, and then commanding the attention of the room the next, orating with the zeal of a preacher on the pulpit.

He’s surrounded by younger fighters from his camp, who he tends to address in an almost fatherly tone, offering jokes, stories and advice, depending on the moment.

Broner plays up his outspokenness when the cameras are rolling—and it’s no act, the man speaks his mind regardless of any blowback and is nicknamed “The Problem” for reasons not entirely confined to the ring—but behind the scenes, he carries himself as more of a mentor than a megalomaniac.

In this way, he’s like one of his mentors, Floyd Mayweather Jr., who he refers to as “big brother.”

Broner has long considered himself the heir to Mayweather’s perch atop the sport, and the feeling seems to be at least partially mutual: Mayweather drops by Broner’s training sessions the following night, urging him on, pushing him to push himself.

The two are plenty alike: supremely talented athletes who are also supremely polarizing, largely because of their flamboyance and how they seem to revel in all manner of peacockery, whether they’re flaunting their wealth or their preternatural boxing skills.

Their relationship extends further than that, with Mayweather serving as Broner’s confidant, and vice versa.

“He tells me things that he doesn’t talk to a lot of people about,” Broner says. “I respect him for that. I love him for that. And I know he loves me. I know that he’s not going to tell me anything wrong.”

Mayweather’s impending retirement, which may or may not take place after his next fight in September, is figuring into how Broner views his clash with Porter, which airs live Saturday on NBC (8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT).

“It’s the biggest fight of my career because now that my big brother has only 36 minutes left in the game—so he says—every fight from here on out is going to be the biggest fight of my career,” Broner states, turning his attention to Porter. “I can’t take this guy as a joke. I just want him to bring it. I don’t want any excuses. Like big bro says, ‘We’re gonna to see what he bring to the table.’”

And though Broner is generally tight-lipped about his conversations with Mayweather, he does share one piece of advice that Floyd has impressed upon on him.

“He’s always told me, ‘Just be yourself,’” Broner says. “I’d rather have somebody hate me for being me than love me for being somebody that I’m not.”

There. “Problem” solved.

Porter Brushes Off Adrien Broner Gym Confrontation
Posted by: Ryan Burton on 6/18/2015

By Ryan Burton

Mayweather Boxing Club, Las Vegas, Nevada - Yesterday when Shawn Porter was wrapping up his media workout, Adrien Broner stepped in the ring to confront his fellow Ohio native.

Broner, who faces Porter on Saturday night, was jawing with him and his team, making comments like his father (and trainer) and his strength and conditioning coach can't fight for him when they meet in the ring. The fight, which is part of Al Haymon's PBC series, headlines a NBC televised main event from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Porter took the confrontation in stride. Broner is known for being flamboyant and Porter didn't seem to too surprised that he would try to throw off their workout.

"It's all good. He didn't do anything to disrupt what we were doing. We have a tight operation. We were having fun in there and now it's time to have fun in the fight. I don't care about anything he's saying or anything he's doing. All that matters is when we get in the ring on Saturday night," Porter told BoxingScene.com.

AMIR KHAN GIVES IN-DEPTH BREAKDOWN OF ADRIEN BRONER VS. SHAWN PORTER: "IT WILL BE AN ALL-ACTION FIGHT...A CLOSE FIGHT"
By Ben Thompson | June 18, 2015

amirkhan6.jpg

AMIR KHAN ON BRONER VS. PORTER:

"The way I see it, Broner and Porter, they're both good fighters, similar in size height-wise. They're both similar in height, very short, so height-wise, their reach is similar. I think Broner might be the fighter who's more athletic. Broner's a little bit more athletic, good movement on his feet, you know, shoulder rolls. With Porter, Porter's a tight fighter, a fighter who's a little stiff, so I think that's why Broner will kind of just keep picking at him really. He won't try to go for the knockout or hurt him. I think he'll just keep picking at him.

Maybe early in the fight, he might even put him down; he might put Porter down, Broner, because Porter's going to be quite dehydrated from the weight. He's bringing him down to 145 and Porter is kind of a thick guy. First of all, I hope, I mean, I don't know if he's going to make the weight, but I think 145, which is the catchweight; is it 145 or 144? I don't know if he'll make the weight, man. He might not make the weight. If the fight's made at 147, Porter's got it. If they made it at 145, just that two pounds makes a massive difference and Broner's got it.

I think it will be an all-action fight. Porter's going to think he's got the power to hurt him. He's going to try and throw a lot of punches. He has a decent, high workrate, but is that same workrate and power going to be there even if he makes the weight? That last two pounds might just kill too much energy in him.

But Shawn comes to fight, bro. It's a good fight he's taking, Broner. It's not an easy fight for him. Shawn could be a bad style for him. Look, the only reason why I think Broner could win is the weight thing. Porter used to be a light middleweight, brother, in the amateurs. I don't think his power will be with him. I just don't see it. And he's not that athletic, you know what I mean, where he's not really an athletic fighter. Porter's a tight fighter. Then again, we've seen Broner go down. I don't know if Porter has the same power as Maidana, but...you know what, bro, this is a 50/50 fight. I give it 60 to Broner and 40 to Porter. It is a close fight. It's a very close fight. If you break it down, either one of them could win the fight. It's just styles and whichever Broner and which Porter turns up on the night."

Phil Lo Greco replaces Roberto Garcia in tilt against Errol Spence Jr.
Jun 18, 2015 By Jason Scavone

Errol Spence Jr. was preparing for one veteran. Now he’s going to face another come Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT).

Phil-Lo-Greco.jpg

Phil Lo Greco will take on Errol Spence Jr. on short notice Saturday night.

Roberto Garcia was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout with Errol Spence Jr. (16-0, 13 KOs) for personal reasons. In his place, Phil Lo Greco (26-1, 14 KOs) will step into the ring with Spence in a fight airing live on NBC.

Lo Greco, 30, built up his résumé mostly in his native Canada before venturing abroad to campaign in Italy and New Jersey. His lone loss came at the hands of co-main event fighter Shawn Porter, who handed him a 10-round loss by unanimous decision in May 2013.

The two became friendly after the loss, and Porter helped Lo Greco prepare for his return to the ring against Rafael Cobos by sparring with Lo Greco in the weeks leading up to his March 6 fight in Las Vegas. Whatever they did, it worked, as Lo Greco nearly shut out Cobos over eight rounds at the MGM Grand’s Marquee Ballroom.

Business As Usual For Spence With New Opponent
Posted by: Jake Donovan on 6/18/2015 .

By Jake Donovan

You have to hand it to Errol Spence. The unbeaten welterweight remained in positive spirits, even in the face of his planned NBC debut potentially taking a major it.

On deck for the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxer was a crossroads bout with resurgent Roberto Garcia, scheduled to serve as the chief support of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event will feature Adrien Broner facing Shawn Porter in a catchweight battle between former titlists from Ohio that will air live on NBC (Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET).

But Garcia withdrew on Wednesday, citing personal issues.

As BoxingScene.com Editor-in-Chief Rick Reeno reported Wednesday night, Canada's Phil Lo Greco was being sought as a late replacement to help maintain Spence's place on the telecast. The fight was finalized Thursday morning after receiving approval from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Despite a new opponent with a totally different fighting style, it remains business as usual for the fighting Texan.

“I’m just ready to fight. I want to weigh-in, get some food in my stomach and get in that ring," Spence (16-0, 13KOs) commented. "I’m on weight already, it’s been a long, eight-week training camp so we’re one hundred percent ready."

The bout will mark the first free network appearance for Spence, regarded by many as perhaps the best prospect from the 2012 U.S. Olympic male boxing team. The group that fought in the London Olympics came home empty-handed, the first time in history a U.S. boxing team failed to medal.

Spence lasted deeper than anoyne else from Team USA, even breathing new life into USA's chances after a second-round loss was overturned upon a successful appeal. However, he missed out on making the medal round after dropping a decision to Russia's Andrey Zamkovoy in the quarterfinal round, one fight short of advancing to the medal round.

The letdown in London hasn't deterred the southpaw from Texas to making his mark in the pro ranks. His past several ring appearances have taken place on regional cable or on the undercards of prominent events.

Now that his team—which includes powerful adviser Al Haymon—secured an appropriate opponent in time, the expectation from the 25-year old is delivering a performance that leaves fans satisfied and anxiously awaiting his next fight.

“Fighting on NBC, on my biggest card to date, it’s really big for me and I have to perform so that I can get back on NBC and be the main event next time,” notes Spence.

Same dude broke the news bout Garcia being way over weight hrs before others reported it

A lot of "reporters" cosigned the rehydration rumors too :manny:

Im glad its not true N happy AB isn't bytchmade like that... Im not making a deal bout the rehydration either since the weigh in is early in the morning

I still dont like the catch weight to drain somebody but the rehydration limit don't matter to me since Porter will have 7,8,9 hrs before the fight to hydrate some more
