steve stoute shoud have been CEO of ILL Will, signed AZ and had a real movement. Him and Nas should have done solo and group albums. hindsight though. great song.

AZ never out sold Nas, altho i do think IWW was influenced in some ways by Doe or Die

it influenced Reasonable Doubt too, im pretty sure Jay linked up with Ski Beatz off the strength of his track on that

doe or die went platinum or at least gold BACK THEN. illmatic didnt sell chit. it didnt go gold until 2001.

and sugar hill was a platinum single. what did nas singles do at that point? aluminum?

props for acknowledging the influence of this album.

One of my all time favorite songs. It didn't get much play down here :to: and it was eventually relegated to the late night mixes. I used to stay up at least three nights a week trying to record the damn song. Used to request it and everything.

Then Napster touched down :jawalrus: :ahh: and it was at my fingertips.

Favorite AZ song.

I still remember when Buster Mathis Jr. used this as his ring entrance vs Mike Tyson.

Whoa whoa whoa...

Doe or Die did hit gold, not plat... but Illmatic went gold in '95. It didn't go plat until 2001.

BUT...

"Sugar Hill" def. went gold and got heavy radio play before a single Nas song did. That much is definitely true. And, off the strength of that song's popularity, AZ got a lot of spots on R&B remixes and whatnot too. It's wild that he was able to get off to a start like that, but never really capitalized on it or built from there. There was def. a time (a short time, but still) when AZ was ahead of Nas popularity and sales-wise. But after "If I Ruled The World", Nas pretty much took that ball and ran with it much further than AZ did.

Doe Or Die isn't a classic imo, it has classic tracks but weak tracks like this kill the album for me.

Everyone's entitled to the their own opinion, but there's no bad song on the album. :aicmon:

Anyway, this song and video was epic.
