It "used to be" that you would root Yankees and Giants together and Jets and Mets together because the former played in Yankee Stadium in The Bronx and the later played in Shea Stadium in Queens. Everybody rooted for the Knicks and Rangers because they were the only teams in the area. It was later extended to Yankees/Giants/Rangers/Knicks vs Mets/Jets/Islanders/Nets.
It's that reason why Long Island was/is heavily Mets/Jets/Islanders/Nets and why Manhattan/Bronx was/is heavily Yankees/Giants/Rangers/Knicks this doesn't factor success of the teams pressure/guidance from family and friends and the increase of technology in perception of teams and players (ESPN, MSG Network, Internet, Video Games, etc.)
