Box Office: 'Avengers: Endgame' Passes 'Titanic' Globally With $2.2B
It’s truly the Avengers’ world. The opening weekend of “Avengers: Endgame” demolished box office records with a stunning $350 million in North America and $1.2 billion worldwide.
Disney-Marvel’s fourth and final Avengers superhero movie has captivated moviegoers, accounting for more than four of every five tickets sold domestically. “Avengers: Endgame” topped the year-old “Avengers: Infinity War” records by nearly $100 million domestically and a jaw-dropping $560 million worldwide. China generated an astounding $329 million over its five-day launch weekend.

And with a snap, Avengers: Endgame is swelling, just as expected. Industry estimates tonight see $157M for Friday (including $60M record previews), which is $37.9M more than Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ opening and single day record of $119.1M. And as for the weekend, right now the average is around $349M off the widest theatrical release ever of 4,662. Saturday is expected to ease between -30% and -35% for a take between $102M-$109M.
Consider that amount of money for a minute – $349M. That’s a total that many studios hope their tentpoles generate in their domestic lifetime. It’s an amount of cash that’s close to $100m higher than the record opening of Avengers: Infinity War! (at this point in time Endgame is $91.3M higher). It’s an opening that’s $101M higher than Force Awakens’ $247.96M start.

The amount of money that Endgame is raking in is higher than any single overall box office weekend for all pics tracked. The highest weekend of all-time was a year ago when Infinity War led all titles to a $314M three-day. This year? Thanks to Endgame, the weekend box office is soaring to $392.6M. And it’s not just Disney/Marvel who gets to bathe in this cash, but exhibitors, concession suppliers, Imax, Dolby; this is an industry ripple effect. The rays of Endgame shine on many.
So how does the success of Endgame impact that large -17% deficit between the 2019 and 2018 U.S./Canada B.O.? Heading into the weekend, the 2019 B.O. totaled $2.945B to 2018’s $3.5B for the period of Jan. 1 to April 25 per ComScore. Essentially by Sunday, that gap should whittle down to -13% with 2019 totaling $3.337B to 2018’s $3.86B over the same period. That’s a difference of a little more than a half billion. Of that –$274.5M– is the difference between Black Panther and Captain Marvel‘s running totals at the same point last year (as of Sunday).
Tonight CinemaScore audiences gave Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe its third A+ for Endgame following The Avengers and Black Panther.
