Reality Check
Keepin' it 100
Picked one hell of a weekend to be out of town. Stern should have fined him years ago for the bullshyt he said then. This is definitely worse and I would hope that they either force him out via 2 year suspension like what MLB did with Marge Schott.
As much as people want him gone, people calling for blood don’t understand that it isn’t that easy. Even though he’s clearly guilty, “due process” is needed for three reasons:
1) If Sterling is suspended indefinitely or for a set amount of time, the rest of the organization needs to come up with a contingency plan for what happens (i.e. who takes over what positions). That isn’t going to happen if Silver kicks out Sterling within 30 minutes of the audio leaking. The Clippers would need a couple days to figure out that structure and prepare for Sterling’s punishment and the aftermath/backlash of his comments.
2) If the league somehow forces Sterling out of the league, buying a professional sports franchise is not as easy as buying groceries. There will be people interested, but it would take weeks or months for approval on a new owner. The league would need some time to figure out how to proceed in putting the team up for sale or removing Sterling from power.
3) NBA and the Clippers need time to figure out how to proceed with a damage control plan because of his comments. Again, this is not going to happen within an hour of a TMZ post.
