The Deep State
altered :laff:

white people are evil man :russ:

ehhhhhh not so fast there.

Its easy to doctor tape. That shyt seemed to skip around a few times.

Sterling clearly said what he said, but that wasn't a completely linear conversation.

Plus, theres a legal issue to this cause if you remember, NBC had doctored parts of the Zimmerman tape too.

Sports Illustrated legal analyst Michael McCann, who is a Harvard Law grad, attorney, professor and journalist, outlined the likely process the NBA faces from here on Saturday. Of most interest was a note on the likelihood that the NBA could somehow remove Sterling as owner of the Clippers, something many have suggested is necessary.

McCann explains:

Forcibly removing Sterling from the NBA is unlikely to happen. The NBA's constitution, which is confidential, reportedly contains language permitting owners to authorize the league to sell a team without an owner's consent. The language, SI.com is told, only covers very limited circumstances and these circumstances concern team finances -- namely, when an owner can't pay his bills.

There is reportedly no language authorizing the NBA to sell a team because of an owner's hurtful remarks or embarrassing behavior. Even if constitutional language could be construed to authorize a forced sale of the Clippers, NBA owners would likely be reluctant to do so given the precedent it would set.

It was always a messy proposition, but it seems it'd be quite an uphill battle given the league's constitution.

McCann also made several other key notes:

  • The league will investigate before taking action, as Sterling is owed due process.
  • That will include confirming the authenticity of the tape and interviewing relevant parties (Sterling, players, employees, the girlfriend, etc).
  • The largest fine issued by the NBA to an owner in the past is $500,000. Even hitting Sterling with a record-setting fine would hardly make a dent given his $1.9 billion net worth, though the money goes to charity, meaning it`s still a worthwhile action.
  • Suspension is possible, as commissioner Adam Silver could cite the "best interests" of the game, something MLB has done in the past.
Having said all of that, an "indefinite" suspension is also a possibility, one that could be leveraged to try and force Sterling to sell, taking over the operations of the franchise in the meantime.
