It isn't what they call themselves that is the issue, but, rather, what position they are taking. Those 'lacking belief' could be one of a few differing positions: agnostic, verificationist, deist, etc.

This. Plus everyone defines it differently.

To me agnosticism and atheism is the same thing. A lack of belief in deities. Period. Nothing more nothing less. It doesn't describe anything else about the person other than a lack of belief in bullshyt.
