If you are an atheist, what is the point, if any, of planning a funeral for your future demise, or attending that of your loved ones as funerals have it's origins and foundation as religious ceremony?

Do you have rituals for processing of the body (attire, cleansing, makeup etc) or is it donated to science?

Is cremation a preferable method because of the religious connotations associated with burial? Are the ashes kept in a jar or is it discarded?

Does the idea of "paying your respects" to a lifeless body seem rather irrational to an atheist as no known conception of a spirit or afterlife is celebrated within atheist circles?

Please provide valid reasons as to why an atheist would attend or would prefer for themselves a funeral.

Who cares what the origins are? Surely, you celebrate some of the holidays like Christmas, Halloween and the like, which may have pagan or anti-Christian origins. We all put our own meanings to these events, regardless of what it may have meant once upon of time.

Are you stating that funerals are no longer considered religious ceremonies? If so what does an atheist funeral look like?

Not for everyone. You don't have to invoke religious concepts at a funeral. It can be a time for people to just remember the one they lost.

Why a funneral and not a wake, why burry and not cremate, why pay respects to a lifeless body?

Atheist have no belief in the purpose in the ritual of a funeral, I am questioning those that don't strictly adhere to their beliefs and their audacity not to follow that which they say.

I agree that atheists have no unified belief in the purpose of a funeral. However, each individual might have a belief. It has NOTHING to do with atheism. You don't need to believe in Jesus or any God for that matter to want to mourn the death of a loved one

You think people only have funerals because of religion? Like a city full of atheists would just leave their dead in the streets because why bother, there is no god? You can't be serious....
