At what age is the average person supposed to be proficient at reading in general?

I put on Halo 3 for my 8 yr old nephew and this nikka been sitting there with the :to: for about 20 minutes.

there are 3 options on the screen Start Select and Leave.

My memory isn't that good but I doubt I was that confused at those 3 words at 8 yrs of age.

I think he's retarded.... but its to be expected

his mama had the nikka when she was 17 by some random nikka who is in jail now

tried that, he sits there and huffs and puffs and acts like I'm the bad guy when I do so.

So when he plays a video game and they tell him exactly what buttons to press right before it starts and he chooses to just completely ignore the text then I let him suffer

:merchant:

I just turned off the game and put on a movie, asked him several times if he wanted to stop the movie and continue the game and he said no

(which is a damn lie because he's been asking to play it all day)

I could have just tell him what to press but in the end what would that accomplish?

So I guess I'm the "bad guy" now

Bout to start the game up again and let him navigate himself.

I'm not expecting him to know every word/definition in existence but If he can at least MAKE AN ATTEMPT to sound things out only then will I be able to help him.

If he doesn't attempt then what exactly can I do?

Breh you needa take him under your wing real talk, I became a uncle at 2. no :duck: So I'm qualified to speak on this. Take that dude under your wing real talk, tell him it might get worse later on and god forbid people might try to make fun of lil homie. Reward him when he does right.

I've seen people go up reading levels in a short time.

This is sad for a lot of reasons.

1. finding out he cannot read through a video game.
2. him feeling defeated and not wanting to continue on
3. You saying he's not your kid, so you can't be too fussed about it.
4. His mother painting the town red with plenty ciroc on deck while her child is in the house with you.

You need to turn off that damn game, and put his ass in the shower, make him brush and floss and read to him. Make it an everyday thing, it doesn't have to be regular stories or books. When you're walking down the street, read placards, ads, etc. While watching tv or a cartoon ask him to explain to you what's going on. Also, if you're going to let him play video games opt for some that are age appropriate. As simple as they may seem they have hidden educational gems. Lastly, try not to judge him and embarrass him for not knowing. Doing so will help you out in terms of not being viewed as "the bad guy."
