At their absolute peak in terms of in-ring ability, how would you rank: Benoit, Eddie, Angle, & Y2J?

Hard to rank the middle two imo but Kurt is number 1 imo could wrestle any style match it seemed. Jericho is last among this group but I must give him credit for reinventing his character every few years. I'm not sure if it Benoit then Eddie or Eddie and Benoit for 2 and 3 lol.

Angle was not even close to Eddie and Benoit.
You don't think so? He was incredibly technical. He could work stiff. He had a versatile moveset. His timing was sharp. He could sell. He could wrestle any type of match and elevate almost anyone not as good as him to make them look better. He had arguably the prettiest moonsault of all time and the way he did his belly to belly suplexes was unique.

I dunno. I put him below those 2 but he's not far below them IMO. They also had great bodies of work in Japan, ECW, and WCW, and I agree with whoever was saying that Eddie's sharpest work was in WCW. But at least in WWE I think all 3 of them were fairly close in terms of their in-ring skills.

The sad thing is I don't think Angle actually ever reached his full potential. The reoccurring neck issues coincided with him settling on his match formula and I think he kind of plateaued in 2003 from a physical and psychology angle. I would say it's pretty much a lock he would have gotten even better had the neck stuff not started to break him down in 2003.

To date, Brock and Angle are the two guys with the quickest rises from rookie to top tier talent I've ever seen, and neither really reached their full potentials. Brock would have been possibly THE single GOAT big man had he not left in 2004 and stayed on his course.

Good post! What do you consider Angle's best matches? Also, in terms of in-ring ability how would you rank Bret Hart, Angle, Benoit, Lesnar, and Guerrero?

I don't know that I have a definitive ranking list or anything but some of what I think to be Kurt's best matches

Kurt vs Shane KOTR 2001
Kurt vs Austin Summerslam 2001 (honestly I put this neck and neck with Austin/Rock at WM 17 as the GOAT WWE main event)
Kurt vs Benoit Rumble 2003
Kurt vs Taker No Way Out 2006
Kurt vs Christian in TNA had multiple excellent matches
Kurt vs AJ in TNA had multiple excellent matches
Kurt vs Joe in that shootstyle match
Kurt vs Anderson cage match

I'm sure there are a lot of fantastic matches in the Smackdown Six era but I haven't watched it in long enough I can't really remember any that stand out. All of the Brock/Angle matches disappointed me, and I don't think the Eddie/Kurt matches really reached the level they should have either. Kurt/HBK has its merits but also falls really heavily into the Angle formula match.

If I'm ranking pure technique I'd probably go Bret > Eddie = Benoit > Angle > Lesnar

Angle's 2001 In-Ring work is God-Tier level. That version of Kurt is on par with any technical wrestler ever that you could name. Like how in boxing, The Riddikk Bowe that fought Evander Holyfield in their 1st fight could match up with any ATG HW. 01 Angle's in ring work matches up with that of any technical wrestler's work at their best.

As to how I would rank the 4...

Angle
Benoit
Guerrero
Jericho

Good post

Btw it seems like almost everyone has Jericho under the other 3. I’ve always thought he’s so good in all areas that it elevated his in-ring work, not to mention he often had good dance partners. I think Jericho could hang with the best and it makes a lot of people think of him in the same way. I think Jericho’s in-ring work is slightly above someone like Edge.

Jericho is #4 to me because his work is just a tier below the others. The other 3 at their peak were A+ players in terms of ring ability. Jericho was great, but he was never that great to me.

Jericho overall would probably be #1 ifyou combined all the other factors (longevity, personality, versatility, creativity, etc). But as just as just purely in ring, he's a notch below the other guys
