How long are you planning on being there? What exactly are you looking to do while you are there? Are you interested in buying property? Renting?

Post specific questions and I'll have them answered.

How'd you come across this job?

I'm from Johannesburg (Joburg, Jozi). AMA.

Where are you going to live? The CBD is a dump so fair warning don't even look at as an option. I've lived in Joburg all my life and only speak English and Afrikaans. Learning Zulu could be advantageous but is not a requirement. English is all you need to get around. Off the top of my head I'd say:

Make sure you can drive stick.
Don't go to Babylon.
Always be courteous.
Don't eat pies from garages. Actually don't eat pies unless it made by a human being you know.
Best places to get woman are varsity towns (Braamfontein, Auckland Park, etc).
I'm diving into this head first and partially blind. The person I'm replacing hasn't filled me in on shyt. Guy basically got fired so he's in idgaf mode. Can't drive stick but I'm told to prepare to buy a car once I get there. Depending on how far my place is, I'll buy a bike. Need the exercise anyway. Never heard of Babylon but was told we aren't allowed to go to Sunnyside at all. What's the deal with pies?

The plan is for 3 years but I can subtract/add a year if I like. What I'll be doing I'm really not at liberty to say. I don't like talking about work anyway but definitely not this position. Only thing I will say is I'll be working at the embassy. DoS provides everything for me so I won't need to rent or buy anything (except a vehicle).

There are taxi's and buses to most city centre's, but they don't operate until late, forget about catching a bus or taxi after 7pm and they have predetermined routes. Whoever told you to buy a car spoke truth. Where are you going to work?

Babylon is a chain of gay clubs.

If you're going to be working in Johannesburg don't even think about getting a place in Pretoria. Traffic to and fro is a bytch and the Gautrain is expensive.

Pies from garages aren't exactly the freshest. Oh garage = filling/gas station. Robot = traffic light. Roundabout = traffic circle.

You will need a car or atleast have someone with a car to drive you around.

What are some must see/do things?

Depends on what you're into. Gauteng has a vibrant nightlife and has many sites of cultural/historical significance

What's the deal with Babylon @rogue_riezo

Chain of gay night clubs.

or Sunnyside

Nigerians, not the legal immigrant kind.

I'll be working at the US embassy. I see it's not that far from the Univ of Pretoria. How much is a dependable car? The few South Africans I've met here in VA keep telling me to not travel solo. They make Soweto sound like District 9

Enjoy that shyt! Lynnwood would then be your best bet for accommodation. It's diverse and not too pricey.

How much is a dependable car?

Depends on your taste in vehicles and your budget. What is your budget for a vehicle and how long will you be here for?

The few South Africans I've met here in VA keep telling me to not travel solo.

Did they happen to be of the cac persuasion?

They make Soweto sound like District 9

Soweto is massive, there are terrible parts, there are normal parts and there are parts that you'd probably wanna go to when you want to get your dikk sucked.

It is quite far from Pretoria though. 50 minute drive in no traffic.

3 years, I'd say get a car man.
