There's sickness from heat, but there are hot places in the US. Arizona, Vegas, southern parts of Florida. High humidity and heat in other parts of the US too. Story is whack... and its prefaced with "could" as in, "it could happen, but it might not happen". This way, it leaves wiggle room for the author to be like, "I wasn't 100% sure because I don't want to get jammed up."

Oh for sure, but whatever heat there is now the author is speculating (obviously, since he's talking about the future) on the INCREASE of heat. So whatever heat there may be now, there will be more, and it's the difference that may cause issues. Or not. But scientists are supposed to think about different scenarios. Governments too, in theory.
