As Nancy Pelosi sets a visit to Taiwan, there’s increased concern China is getting ready to invade its Asian neighbor.

Will Beijing respond?

CSIS had not finished calculating the number of assets lost across all its games by the time of publication, but, in general, project staff said the US usually loses around 500 aircraft, 20 surface ships and two aircraft carriers per game — a staggering loss unseen for the US since World War II, in just a matter of weeks. The loss of the carriers alone – the US has only 11 total, and each carries at least 5,000 souls — would have potentially disastrous results on the nation’s ability to project power abroad.

But who knows how accurate these projections turn out

US is has the #1 Naval in the world. What u mean heavy naval losses?
You’re in Chinese territory. They will have the advantage. The nearest American backup is in Japan and the Philippines.

If this was off the coast California we’d f-k them up.

I think if the Russia-Ukraine conflict showed us anything, we're vastly overrating these second world powers.

Remember when Russia was supposed to flatten Ukraine in weeks :heh:

China has not had one major conflict in the last 30 years for people to be this afraid of them.

yeah they're not fooling me again. had us conditioned from grade school to think russia is about that life. anyway i blame myself. logically when one country's military spending is a much as the others combined that should really separate them. but then they start selling you on the idea that the costs are less there so they get more bang for the buck and america has so much waste. and look at their fancy weapons (it might be made out of cardboard or an artist rendering). ok if you say so i believe you.

Like I've said. Ukraine resolved a lot of my defense of liberal democratic interventions.

For years Burgis was defended as some intellectual on the left.

He got his ass handed to him here. Dude can't even defend Taiwan now.

These people are just indifferent privileged a$$holes.

You’re comparing taking over whole swaths of land in Ukraine vs one small island. China has the manpower to take over.

Russia tried to pull a GWB hearts and mind routine selling it as liberators welcomed with open arms. Installing puppet governments. China has no qualms about squashing Taiwanese dissident.

Ukraine is a lot easier to invade than Taiwan. Ukraine is a flat plain that has been contested for centuries from the Vikings, to the Mongols, to the Polish, to Napoleon, to the Soviets, to the Nazi’s. It’s very easy to move army’s across.

Taiwan is a rocky island that has been war gaming with the US for nearly 70 years for an invasion by China. It has the latest weaponry and unlike Ukraine is of massive strategic importance to the US. Not only semi-conductors but it would also allow China to have a blue water fleet to challenge US pacific dominance.

There is only a couple beaches where you can land an invasion force on and they are small. Every inch of the ocean and landing zones with be pre-sighted with the latest in smart weapon technology.

Good luck to the country that hasn’t fought a major war in 50 years and would be staging the largest amphibious invasion in world history.

China ain’t totally about invading thats the problem. just like America wasn‘t eager to invade/occupy Japan. They want the island to surrender which is easier to do with bombs. Which is why there proximity makes it easier to pull major damage before reinforcements arrive.

China doesn’t need those cities intact to mine the resources, but China is 100% willing to put the money up to rebuild which Russia wasn’t trying to.

The wrath of the international is the main thing holding them back.

If they thought they could get away with it the same way the did the crackdown on Hong Kong freedoms they would be all in there.

I think you over estimate Chinas logistical and financial capabilities and underestimate Taiwans air defenses and attack craft capabilities. It’s one thing to build empty high rises in a national ponzi scheme, it’s another to build sophisticated intelligent weaponry, aircraft and warships. Russia ran out of their sophisticated tech in days and is having to rely on Soviet weaponry and China never had the arms industry Russia had.

You mention leveling cities when again Taiwan is one big mountain range. The military could move into the mountains if worse came to worse. Taiwan even has its own domestic cruise missile capability that can attack into central China

It’s really a doomsday scenario no matter which way you look at it.
