As hiphop fans how do we argue against this anti hiphop stance?

If someone makes a point, that rappers (Wayne, Nas, Jay, etc) are exploiting black poverty by selling ideas sensationalizing and glorying negatives in the black community to make profit when they are far removed from the circumstances?

I might have been ask this question and I might have used the default answer..."It's just entertainment" :snoop:

What would be your rebuttal to this?

Only one of the 3 names you listed does this, the others give youth and peoples in the struggles empowerment and new horizons through escapism.

Not all glamorize, some talk about the pitfalls, and how far they have come, but my answer would be that rappers didn't create a materialistic, violent, or misogynistic society they simply found a way to profit from it which makes them no different from any other industry that found a come up at somebodies expense, you have to look at society as a whole not just entertainment imo.

I hold any rapper as responsible for his lyrics as I hold any actor as responsible for the roles he plays.

If you aint gonna criticize Stallone then you cant criticize 50 cent....its all Art and entertainment...

I take anything an artist says on record with a grain of salt, its all entertainment....However whatever you say outside the booth and how you present yourself is what i will judge you on .......

When Stallone is on screen he is not actually John Rambo, there are no hidden cameras.

Actors play a role and presented in a movie, rappers rap in first person tense so ... you think and they will always say on mic/interviews this is real.

of all music genres rap is the least fantasy, it comes out like documented accounts of the MC's life past and present. How can you compare an actor on screen reading lines written for him, to an MC telling you 'he'll stab your brain with your nose bone'

I'd say that these rappers are real people and the product of their environment and their life experiences...and nothing about these guys makes them perfect individuals or paragons of virtue or high moral ideals...certain things just don't disappear because the artist, personally got rich...their music is always gonna reflect that to some extent, no matter how much we deride it...it really is just art...they're not preachers or politicians

there is no rebuttal because its true, rap just exploits the worse parts of black cutlure so overall rap music is detrimental to the black race and black culture

Yeah I think we can admit some problems with the way the dominant hip hop content focused on glorifying violence / misogyny / materialism.. the best way to defend it is not denial but contextualization and agreeing in some part that it'd be good for more variance in content to come into the mainstream.. especially since the 80s and the crack era have been long over at this point

the black cat is my crown...
if anyone has a problem with the content of any rap song then they should be more offended by reality... if we work to change the reality that millions of urban youth grow up in then we can rightfully expect a bunch of happy-go-lucky songs to be produced to reflect that reality... considering that currently the world that millions of youth grow up in is fukked up, expect to hear fukked up music..
