Reading about Mariah Carey racial identity and Dominican versus Haitian situations have given me more clarity and perspective on the mixed race/light/dark skin issues here in American society. I will admit that I have asleep and I really haven't cared for the majority of my life but I'm now taking a deeper, personal look into the damage & effects light/dark skin worship has caused the "black" identity. First, I'll address the mixed race perspective then I'll go into the black(sub-Saharan)perspective.
I don't want to sound like I'm attacking Latinos(for lack of a better word) because there are some racially aware "Latinos" that are proud of their black ancestry/heritage and are going as far as to create their own black power movements like Colombia, Venezuela & Brazil but the harsh reality is that(in their opinion) "black" is and should remain at the bottom in these societies. Latinos(of every mix)know it and racially aware black people know it. White and light is the standard in Latin America. Sub-Saharans every need to realize that just because someone has skin similar to us doesn't mean that makes them us. You could even extended this ideology towards dark skinned Indians(Dravidians, Siddis, ect). I'm not saying to exclude anyone but blacks throughout the diaspora need to start being more cognizant in realizing the difference between what is only "black" by proximity and what is truly black(aka sub-Saharan). Just because she's a bad ass Dominican or Rican chick with good hair and black features doesn't make her black, by proximity or otherwise. I'm not saying there aren't racially aware Dominicans, Ricans, Cubans ect, however, their societies heavily favor White and light. I'm going to type this nice and large for everyone to see...... DOMINICANS, RICANS AND CUBANS ARE MIXED!!! Unless they identify as black, THEY ARE MIXED!!!! DON'T ARGUE!
As for sub-Saharans, especially in the US, we've got to do better..... Men and women. I'm all for another " black is beautiful" movement but it has to be done the right way because I can already see a light skin backlash coming if this were to happen. The only people that shouldn't be embraced are self-haters and sellouts. We need to show all black women the same attention (and VICE VERSA, LADIES)whether light/medium/dark toned provided they IDENTIFY with black culture, skin, ect..... and that goes for everybody.
