In the absence of answers, family members respond in different ways. Sherra Wright, now 44, has remarried and runs a ministry, Born 2 Prosper. Last year she published a roman-a-clef titled Mr. Tell Me Anything, the tale of a philandering NBA player who moves to Memphis and marries an older woman. From the promotional material: “Despite her nurturing efforts, corruption and deceit took their stable places in his life. A breaking point is reached. She makes a life-altering decision. Does it work out for her good? Did all his lies finally catch up to him? Would he or she pay the ultimate price?” According to Bookscan, a data provider for the book industry, the novel has sold seven copies.

:what: she basically wrote a confession.

the novel has sold seven copies.

Jimmie Martin

In a case already filled with twists and turns, the death of Lorenzen Wright has a new convolution: Jimmie Martin, a wannabe rapper and convicted killer who allegedly helped slay the basketball star in 2010 for his life insurance.

In a stunning move Friday, prosecutors unveiled Martin as the mysterious "unindicted co-conspirator'' — the unnamed accomplice looming in the public's imagination since December when the seven-year-old cold case suddenly turned hot and police arrested Wright's ex-wife, Sherra.

Authorities charged Sherra Wright and her yardman, Billy Ray Turner, both 47, with first-degree murder, but revealed little about the third player in the alleged plot.

That changed late Friday when Assistant District Attorney Paul Hagerman named Martin before a packed courtroom, identifying him as Sherra Wright's cousin. The prosecutor also identified Martin as the tipster who directed authorities to a gun — the weapon used to kill Lorenzen Wright — and to the spot where it was secreted in a Mississippi lake.

“Jimmie Martin stated that in the days before the murder of Lorenzen Wright, he was present at a meeting at which Sherra Wright, Billy Turner and he planned the murder of Lorenzen Wright,'' Hagerman said as Turner looked on stoically.

Records show Martin, 35, stood trial in 2009 in Shelby County for the murder of his girlfriend, Martha Jean Bownes. The jury acquitted Martin of a first-degree murder charge, but deadlocked on a lesser charge of second-degree murder. Though Martin later was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison following his retrial in 2012, he was out on bond for the three years between his trials.

Now, some are asking: Might Lorenzen Wright have lived if Martin had been convicted and sent to prison in his first trial in 2009?

“He’s a convicted murderer that was caught in, I think, 40 different lies in his trial,” Turner's defense attorney John Keith Perry told reporters after Friday's hearing. At the hearing, Perry had hoped to win pretrial release for his client on bond.

But Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee would have none of it. Calling Turner "an ongoing danger,'' he fixed the defendant's bond at what he hoped was an impossibly high level: $15 million. No bond has been set yet for Sherra Wright.

Speaking to reporters later, Perry said Martin, not his client, may in fact have killed Lorenzen Wright. He's seen Martin's statements and says they are inconsistent and unreliable.

"Given the incentive to say certain things at a certain period of time ... he would absolutely, positively have a motive to lie," Perry said.

A native of Batesville, Mississippi, Martin dabbled as a rap artist and producer in Memphis when he met Bownes, an Army veteran who had served in Iraq. The pair had endured a stormy relationship when on Jan. 13, 2007, Bownes, 24, was shot dead in her Blue Ridge Park apartment.

"He said from the outset that it was an accident,'' Martin's then-attorney, Coleman Garrett, told the jury at the 2009 trial. Martin called 911 and could be heard crying on the tape. But witnesses for the prosecution told a different story. They spoke of explosive arguments and physical encounters, including one in which Martin allegedly chased Bownes with a hammer that he threw at her, shattering her car window and showering her with broken glass.

According to prosecutor Hagerman, Martin witnessed the planning and aftermath of Wright's July 19, 2010, murder.

“Jimmie Martin ... stated that days after the murder of Lorenzen Wright, he was picked up by Sherra Wright at his home in Batesville, Mississippi. He stated that Sherra Wright borrowed a metal detector from his mother, Edna Robinson, and they then left,'' Hagerman told the court.

"Jimmie Martin said he rode to Memphis, Tennessee, with Sherra Wright, where they picked up Billy Turner, and they confessed to him that they had just murdered Lorenzen Wright. Jimmie Martin stated that he assisted Sherra Wright and Billy Turner in cleaning up the crime scene and destroying evidence from the murder. Jimmie Martin said the metal detector was used to locate a firearm that was dropped during the murder.''

The prosecutor said Martin claims he also helped dispose of the murder weapon.

“Jimmie Martin stated he accompanied Billy Turner to a lake located on Highway 72 in Walnut, Mississippi, where Billy Turner disposed of a handgun that was used to murder Lorenzen Wright,'' Hagerman said.

Among other allegations, Hagerman said:

  • A woman named Claudia Robinson witnessed a meeting at which Martin, Turner and Sherra Wright allegedly plotted to kill the 6-foot-11 Lorenzen Wright, a former standout basketball player for the University of Memphis Tigers who later played 14 seasons in the NBA.
  • An initial attempt to kill Wright in Atlanta failed when the conspirators found an unknown man sleeping on a couch in a home they were targeting.
  • Turner and Sherra Wright were in a sexual relationship and conspired to kill Lorenzen Wright for insurance money.
  • Authorities set up electronic survelliance on the suspects late last year and then released information about the discovery of the gun in the Mississippi lake to the news media late last year.
  • Police then overheard Sherra Wright and Turner discussing the finding of the gun. Wright even flew from her new home in California back to Memphis, where she met with Turner as officers covertly photographed them.
“This information caused Sherra Wright great stress,'' Hagerman told the court. "In a call, Sherra Wright stated, ‘Someone done sent someone somewhere to get something.’ Indicating that she knew the police were talking to an informant."
