Typically not based on years. You’re signed for x amount of albums. The label can decide they don’t want to invest in you anymore though and basically hold you hostage unless you put up the bread to do it yourself which is extremely expensive and they can still say we’re not releasing it.

How many times has SZA gone off about label shyt over the last few years. Many times right? But SZA had and has hits, Ari doesn't. I listened to some of her new song and it sounds like a Janelle Monae. Similar throwback r&b vibes that just are not popping. I'm sorry but it's not a hit, it's more of the same thing that she's been doing. I'm not saying she should go against her artistry and imitate what everyone else is doing - 90s r&b samples, downtempo reverb "fukk that nikka" anthems, etc - but if you're gonna do your own shyt you have to understand you're not gonna be popping. Certainly not enough to get out of debt....

If I remember correctly, Cole/Ib discovered her performing in a jazz club overseas. Does she want to go back to that life while dropping albums on Bandcamp whenever she wants?
