Trial and error. He had pancreatitis where he kept throwing up and getting diarrhea. Low and behold, that was due to the fact we were giving him human food which has a high fat content. The diet not only prolongs their life but keeps their fur healthy.

Long story short, be careful with giving them your leftovers and cook/boil nothing but lean and healthy foods with veggies, no seasoning for them also look into the ingredients of some of those treats.
