That equation is tricky, because technically, a "/" is interpreted as a signal for a fraction, meaning you solve everything on the bottom first and then work the whole equation (in which case it would be 1), but if you interpret it as a regular division bar, then it would be 9.

I don't think either answer is wrong. The first way (division bar as a fraction) is the way that is thought when you are studying for advanced degree entry tests though.

Usually if you want to operate under division, the question would use and actual division sign, not a fraction bar however.

If you answered 9 on a GMAT/GRE exam, you would be wrong because your equation is actually reading

6/1 fractioned by (divided by) 2(2+1)

Yea it does. The order of operations is taught differently in different parts of the world.

PEMDAS vs BODMAS

The acronym doesn't make a difference.

You do left to right for multiplication/division as you do with addition/subtraction.

6/3(1+2)
6/3(3)

The "brackets" is what is in the brackets...just because the 3 has brackets around it doesn't mean it is considered "brackets" in the order of operations anymore...it is now considered multiplication (with the other 3).

Nah, in a bracket like that it means you should distribute the "co-efficient" into the brackets. Our mind just adds whats inside as a short cut to the whole process.

That's why they teach you distribution properties when you are learning the order of operations. Brackets are for distribution. So doing the brackets first would be 2(1+2)= (2 x 1) + (2 x 2) = 6.

Again, if the problem in the OP had a division sign and not a fraction bar, you'd be completely right.

For those confused on the difference between division and a fraction bar (a line that signals a fraction):

Order of Operations

If a problem includes a fraction bar, perform all calculations above and below the fraction bar before dividing the numerator by the denominator.

Apparently simple math: 6÷2(1+2) = ? - Yahoo! Answers

The problem as it is written is 6÷2(1+2) , the ÷ cannot be substituted with a fraction bar because they have different ranks on the order of operations. It is an illegal math move to do this.
