Are you good for goodness sake or because of a fear of god?

Just because I want to do good and have good done to me and my loved ones (and most other people). Not based on any fear. I have my own values and standards. I don't care why anyone does or doesn't do anything, as long as they stay out of my lane.

Gotta love when religious people speak in broken english like they're wise or something :heh:

I'm not religious. The "not good" part is from Machiavelli. Chesed (Kindness) and Gevurah (Justice and Judgement) come from the Kabbalah. Basically you can be kind, but being good doesn't mean letting people walk over you. Just because I use "Religious" knowledge doesn't mean I adhere to any system of belief. Open your mind.

I'm an atheist.

I'm "mostly good" because it's mostly always been beneficial for me to be so. In most of the other situations, I simply feared being caught. I lie when I know I can get away with it. I've stolen on occasions when I knew I wouldn't be caught.

For the most part, I guess my philosophical beliefs are similar to utilitarianism, even though I have a feeling that egoism is really the "true" nature of how people are. Good consequences are preferable to bad consequences, but "doing good" often feels good and can account for many acts of human altruism.

I just follow these principals in life

1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.

2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.

3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.

4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.

5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.

6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.

7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.

8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.

9. Do not harm little children.

10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.

11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

I do good deeds because I personally believe it gives me the freedom to do bad things within reason :ehh:

I'll see a woman drop her wallet as shes leaving the store and tell her, now I can chuck my half-eaten burrito out the window and not give a single fukk about what car it lands on :ehh:

fear of God.

If it wasn't for the fear of the hell fire I will be the most ruthless man on earth
Pardon my presumptions but...I bet that you wouldn't.

Unless you are an ultra-religious type, I'm willing to bet that your life wouldn't be all that different than it is now if you were an atheist.

Which religion?

And pardon again, but if you don't mind me asking...which things in life do you avoid because of religion?

I mean, are you saying that you would murder if not for religion? You'd cheat on your taxes? You'd slap women?

I feel as though our laws mostly keep the biggest offenses under control (My various issues with the justice system not withstanding).

This is assuming that you aren't in finances...if you are in finances than I could see how religious/moral beliefs would strong play into your life. A lot of wall street types seem to lack a moral compass or empathy. And our laws surprisingly (or maybe unsurprisingly, depending on how you look at it) don't seem to keep these people in check.
