I am going to let you all in on a bit of knowledge. It is better to owe taxes than to get a refund.
See, they are taking out your money as taxes and if you have a refund, it means you paid them too much. You do not gain any interest off of that money while the government holds it and uses it for what ever it desires. Instead, you could give the government less in taxes, and take that money and put it in a 6mo to 1yr CD, to earn interest on it. Then when tax time comes around, you pay what you owe. That way, you actually gained money from your taxes, instead of getting paid back your money you overpaid them with.
A simple understanding of it is, "A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow" (due to inflation and possible gain from interest yielding accounts). That is why the money you overpaid to the government and receive back in a tax return, is worth less than the money you have from not overpaying the government.
