Interesting thread. I don’t think being a leader and a boss are that mutually exclusive. They can meander into each other.

The pros and cons however... as a boss, you will have people constantly trying to take your crown because your title is based on a hierarchy. Leadership is more fluid and can be used in more life scenarios.

There are plenty of bosses who hold no weight outside of their job. That’s why they tend to be disliked because more often than not, they abuse their power and base their respect on fear.

A leader is someone you look up to. They’re likeable and more charismatic. They can influence people more easily but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are the boss.

50 Cent is a boss... but look at how lonely he is because of his sociopathic nature. No one wants to fukk with him outside of business because he would sacrifice his own just to stay on top.

A leader is someone like Tupac. He wanted to inspire others to do and think better.

A leader is typically someone whose charismatic, likeable, and that looks out for the team. They also take the views and perspectives of the team members into account for the greater good of the team when making decisions.

A boss is a person in a leadership position. They might not necessarily have the charisma, likeability, and tact of leader. A boss just wants to get the job done and their team is just a means to getting the job done. Most bosses view their team as an expendable resource to meeting a greater goal.

Leaders- MLK, Oprah Winfrey, Nelson Mandela, Clarence Avant, JFK

Bosses- Muammar Gaddafi, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot

Other bosses to a lesser degree minus the extreme murderous intent...

Donald Trump, Vince McMahon, Suge Knight, and Naomi Campbell

Leader because I try to encourage and build.

I can’t remember which book it was, but a FBI or CIA agent wrote it (someone who’s seen a ton of politics), but the theme was simple, there are three situations:
Win-win
win-lose (zero-sum)
lose-lose

A leader will try to get win-win out of all interactions when dealing with other parties. Enough win-win outcomes will lead to building something pretty fukking good.

Most interactions are a zero sum game (win-lose) and nobody gets anywhere when added up. Power politics are zero sum games. A leader will build a quality product, support and team through win-win interactions.
