The mutants are an amalgamation of all societal outcasts and discrimated minorities.

Similar to Janelle Monae's Androids of Metropolis.

The mutants are the oppressed and discriminated...Just like in the real world (I.e. Black people, POC, lgbt, disabled people, etc.)

But there's no mistaking that X-men was inspired by the civil rights movements and it's history. Including magneto and Professor X.

One of the reason why I love X-men more than any superhero comics is because I can relate to it. (That and they have bad-ass characters..and storm)
