I think the fact that they had to stop using the name "ISIS" was a big part of it. That's when they started going off in other directions (Archer: Vice).
I don't think anyone would've argued against a name change. It just feels so off like even though dude did these self-contained seasons they're just going through the motions, the jokes seem more forced and like they're insisting they are funnier than actually are and the callbacks feel less like callbacks and more like joke filler. I'm probably taking this too seriously but I feel like this shyt is unacceptable. The coma seasons have really gotten to me to the point I feel like the GOT fans. I'm going to stop watching until Archer wakes up.

Can we just admit Archer isn't funny anymore.... :manny:

Why can't they just go back to being an agency solving crimes or some shyt?.... I'm only riding this out cuz I been watchin since the beginning but eh... :francis:
Last 3 seasons haven't been funny at all. It's become a show you put on in the background as you do chores.

Only difference is D&D had two years to tell you "we're done with the show" but that was one season. Adam Reed has been "done" with Archer for almost four seasons.

I have loved Archer for the last 3 seasons, I like the different genres.
This season is going very well imho.
Its more about the character interactions than punchline and setups now, and I love that.
The storyline of them being space pirates/mercs is interesting too.

No Whammies!!
:obama: It's entertaining enough to have on in the background.

I think it might be funny if more and more "real" events from his past start influencing his dreams. Kind of like the movie "Mulholland Drive".

i finally caught with danger island to get to this season, and it wasnt bad. it didnt have the fukkery of a in reality archer season, but it was better than i was expecting. the ending of that season and lead into this one seems to be building to something at least

I liked the last episode. I’ve always wanted to know what is Cheryl’s deal? Is she retarded or is she smart? Every time I think it’s the former then she’ll surprise you and say something smart

She's on drugs, and completely insane. At least, the "real" version is. What we've seeing now is Archer's coma dream version of her.

It seems like the "Dreamland" seasons are getting further and further away from reality. The first dream season was simply set in the past in LA (which is where Archer is in the hospital in reality), but now they're into a weird mashup of Sci-Fi clichés. I'm starting to wonder if this is intentional, and means that Archer's brain is getting more and more damaged from lack of oxygen.

honestly, this is probably the more accurate theory. in each version prior hes had a chance to make peace with the people in his life(lana and woodhouse in dreamland, and pam in danger island) but with 1999, things are spinning out of his level of control(the various mix of sci fi series tropes, pam breaking the 4th wall) as his brain is dying. honestly i wouldnt be surprised if archer has been in a coma since he drowned himself in season 4, especially given that vice was the following season and the random genre shifts in seasons since
