2 episodes in and I've really enjoyed it. I'm excited to see how they take this home with the third episode. I love that there's a constant cat and mouse game being played, but that you're never quite positive who the cat is and who the mouse is in any given scenario. Van Helsing and Dracula are both REALLY compelling characters in this one, their dialogue with each other and everyone else shines. Dracula's powers are displayed in pretty unique ways too, especially the shapeshifting (I mean...woof). I also like the quirks here. Van Helsing's sarcasm and Dracula's ego drive so many clever moments in the dialogue.
Also, both of the first two episodes feel like their own unique stories altogether. You do need the first episode to understand some aspects of the second, but a LOT of it can stand on its own considering we're all familiar with the powers of the vampire and also that the many new characters need to have established bits explained to them anyway. The way episode 2 ends means that episode 3 will be another animal too.
On the negatives, I'm focused on the dialogue because the plot leaves a decent amount to be desired imo. There's quite a bit of plot convenience driving the events of the story. But if you can suspend disbelief and not do the "oh why doesn't he just kill that person" or "why wouldn't they be more careful here" then it's just straight up fun to watch. Another shortcoming to me is that I haven't found any of the other characters particularly interesting. The second episode did better with side-character and subplot development but it was still pretty light.
Lastly on the gore stuff, there was really only one bit that really made me squirm. The freakin' nails stuff fam. This is practically a trope, it happens so often in horror movies and shows. But it gets me every damned time. Yall will know what I'm talkin' about.
