Depends on your school. I took an online class where we had to meet up online every week. We met in an interactive online chat room and the teacher would go over material and powerpoint slides. It was cool not to have to drive to campus and all tests were unofficially open book. Depending on the course, you could even "collaborate" on tests.
It has it's drawbacks though. You have to have a laser like focus with online classes. Half the time the teacher will be discussing material and I'm checking the coli and sh!t. I agree that it is harder than in-person classes because you do have to teach yourself a lot of the material.
