There are studies confirming this. It's about three seconds into the future and it's not really sensing, but a recognition and appliance of certain patterns beneath that part of your brain that directly interacts with reality....

One time i was walking down a street and i turned a corner and i had this wave of extreme emptiness wash over me... So i stopped .. Ill never forget it .... I looked around, then i looked down and it was a manhole big enough for three people to fall in and die. I swear to u before i turned that corner i didn't know it was there.
