What everyone has said. It's the same as the situation with Gyllenhaal in the sense that everyone figured he'd be a big star but he's really just a character actor. He seems more in his lane doing understated roles like In Bruges than he does doing Total Recall or Alexander...one was boring and the other was terrible

You aren't going to get a better "rub" than what cruise did for him in minority report he was set, had the look/competency on camera and the rockin roll persona (which kept him in the headlines) off camera. He came in like like gang busters and he never reached that level again my guess was he was a natural cocky heel/tweener who kept playing mixed up heroes, in these roles he didn't quite have the same "it" factor. He also wasn't suited to be leading man material he is more suited co staringaround 2001-2004?

He's basically Ben Affleck without the directing chops to dig himself out of the hole.
According to him, he got blackballed for turning down too many high profile roles. He was trying not to be type cast and Hollywood told him
