Went thru the same dilemma back in January. Did extensive research on it and looks like my best best would be to have the surgery to correct the misplacement of the dreaded "5th metacarpal".
Like many of you, i damaged it punching a reinforced aluminum door - but with me, i punched it with full force 4 times (can still see the dents as you walk to open the door to enter the garage).
My hand swole something so bad.
Didn't have insurance at the time (still dont) so i went to a chiropractor friend and he took xrays of my hand. The fracture wasn't good. Told me to splint it and i did.
But i continued doing things as though the injury never occured (went to the gym the next day, went clubbing every weekend - hurt it grinding on some broad cuz she bumped into my fist, cats tryna give me daps when i'm drunk so i forget and hand shake/dap them - mind you its my right hand that was forfeited to the door confrontation).
So now, my hand will not make a complete fist and it looks slightly deformed.
Sometimes, i'll wake up with a slight pain - but with some movement, it wanes down a bit.
I've got flag football season coming up in the next couple weeks.
Without health insurance, i'm literally risking my most precious typing asset (it's hard for me to write - this injury would be a major setback in college, holy shiit).
If you have insurance and the luxury of getting it repaired, it's worth the 2-3 months of castage. The rest of your life will most likely thank you for it.
