I agree with the OP completely. I enjoy the airy atmosphere of old movies, the new ones are too realistic and all the beauty is drained from it. It changes the feel of the movies.

i actually think the film and lighting used in that area looks more unnatural than most movies today.

i think we were raised on watching movies like that, so it tells us thats what its supposed to look like. we've advanced so far in film, it now looks unreal, although its closer to what our eyes actually see in real life.

I think the point in literature and movies for the most part is to create a sphere or a sense of another reality co-existing with ours that we can marvel at through our imaginations or our eyes. Everything is too literal these days. It is not just a movie thing but a cultural thing too, compare to fashion/music to the past and see how different and less creative it is.
