I have a degree in computer science. You’ll be a Software Engineer. Didn’t graduate with a 3.0 gpa, still had multiple job offers before I walked the stage, made 100k+ before I turned 30.

It’s a mindblowingly hard ass major but if you have the resolve it will pay off big time. I’ve been in the industry for 12 years now. If you have any questions shoot em.
Does the program you went into have anything with the job prospects? Did you do any internships? How much did you start off with making breh?

My school isn’t Yale or anything but it is a little prestigious in the Midwest. It’s a well known engineering school in Missouri (Missouri University of Science and Technology). I had one co-op (basically a internship that takes a semester and a summer). I started out making 58k in the Midwest. I’m ancient though, this was in 2007. Starting salaries for SE’s are way better now.

I'd put it up their with Engineering as one of the few degrees even worth going to college for
Probably heard it from some hatin ass coli breh

:mjlol:

Lol. CS guys are engineers who write code not help desk people. Been working in the industry for years and I’d be insulted if someone had me fukking with exchange.

:heh:
This. Be a software engineer but perform help desk duties brehs. :snoop:

@Colgatebrah A post from the 6 figures forum from another breh with a CompSci degree

Path to Becoming a Software Engineer

Enroll in a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science course at an accredited university. You can find a list of them here: Download Data Files . It doesn't matter too much where you go because the curriculum will be more or less the same. If you don't want to be saddled with student loan debt then buckle down and get scholarships. That's basically free money and a pretty low number of students take advantage of them. When I was in high school all of the AVID kids had scholarships and most of them had $50k+ by the end of the school year. And that's to say nothing of the people who also landed full ride scholarships. Pay attention when the algorithms courses pop up. They're generally non-essential in day-to-day work as an SE, but you'll need that knowledge to make it through the interview process. Once you start the algorithms courses you need to study often and continuously. I'm talking at least 30-45 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week, up until you have a job offer in hand. Try to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and constantly apply to internships. Those two things will push you ahead of most of your competition. The languages you'll want to focus on are Java, Python, JavaScript, and C++ (to a lesser extent). Create a GitHub account (or GitLab, their offerings are a little better IMO) and keep it updated with your class projects. The idea is to show that you did more than just exist for 4-6 years. Start building a resume and your LinkedIn profile. Try to update them at least once per month because its an iterative process and it takes a very long time before you get something solid. The summer leading into your final year is when you need to start applying heavily. Apply to college grad programs and apply outside of the area you live. I applied literally all over the country and even internationally. If you've been doing what I've told you to do (stay studying algorithms, keep iterating over your resume, applying frequently) then you should have at least 3 on-site interviews and possibly a few offers. In the interview process you don't always have to have the correct answer, you just need to show you're a good fit for the team. Don't tell people what you think they want to hear. Be forthcoming about your shortcomings but show that you're able to make up for that. The socially awkward person who strains to have person to person interaction is less likely to be hired. When you get an offer, negotiate.

I have MIS degree, which is not as hard as CS degree ( i transferred out of CS to MIS) but still good enough to get you interviews for engineer positions
I'm a sr. engineer now and constantly get contacted by Amazon, Google, FB, JPMorgan, etc recruiters
It's relatively easy to get a job after your first job, the first job is the hardest because companies don't want to train new developers just to have them leave first chance they get for a 6 figure job

what kind of jobs can you get with this? How much money do you make? What are some of the details of your job..etc.

You have to think about if you like the field first, try some courses on udemy as that will give you a small glimpse into the tech world. CS Degrees can get you:
Software Engineer
Web Developer
Systems Analyst

But you can't get any of those without significant experience.

I have a CS degree, experience you are while in college is crucial, otherwise the degree is worthless. I live quite comfortably and will leave it at that, but I work as Linux/Windows Systems Engineer....

My career path went like this:
Level 1 Help Desk - Answering Phones, making tickets
Level 2 Help Desk - Running Cables, setting up routers, printers
Desktop Administration - Managing PC/Mac Labs
Independent Contractor - Deploying Servers, switches, security cameras, alarm panels, Citrix Administration, VM Administration
Systems Engineer - Linux/Windows Admin for a Government Agency (bash, powershell scripting) - Cloud Storage Management

Don't get me wrong, money is great, but I enjoy my work, if you don't enjoy the work, you will burn out.

Yes, you can, the thing with this thread is people went different paths to get to 6 figures. My path was different from a lot of the guys here. I am also just learning to code. Anyways, aim for Internships in these areas (aim for Machine Learning, Cloud Networking, Data Science, Cyber Security)...then once you get employed full time(gain experience focus on certs). After a year or two at your current job, bounce..to get a salary bump. That's the only way to get gigantic raises.
