Cons:

-You can do it you need to take some youtube clips and read on how to study (verbalize as in read outloud while you are reading important stuff also find practice questions in physics, chemistry, organic)

I get nervous just thinking about those pre-req courses

Cons:
-It is a long path
-Often in debt
-Have to work hard hours in medical school and residency and have to tap dance to arrogant attendings
-The profession can have a high rate of suicide compared to the general population
-risk of getting sued
-lack of autonomy (compared to the past)

Pros
-I'm just going to just recommend medicine/healthcare. Why? So this entire subforum is dedicated to 6 figs 6 certs. Healthcare consumes a large portion of the GDP hence you have a lot of jobs in that sector from nutrition to pharmaceutical companies to IT companies making hospital equipment to tech investing in health.

Everyone has a body and gets old so you have job security in fact probably one of the few areas where automation will break into the least.

No specifically medicine
-Black people can get into the field easier than asians and whites with the same stats (this is because as a breh you will be one of the few in your science classes)

-Black woman ratio to black men ratio is 2-1 you will be feasting heavily if you go to Morehouse, Meharry or Howard. I went with my state school because it was cheaper but still was involved in SNMA

-You get to help your community and your family to live longer because you can learn healthy habits like intermittent fasting. Trying to get 10,000 steps a day and other things.

-Helping other people in multiple studies show that helping others makes you happier

-wealth creation I pay 6k a month towards my loans 200k. I also max out my roth ira, my solo 401k. I have been one year out and I have 72k in my solo 401k. Plus a lot of jobs are independent contractors which means that you can start your LLC and get tax breaks for maxing out your retirement account.

-As a doctor you have job security and you can live anywhere in the US. In other professions you stay with your company like tech (sure you can make six figs but you HAVE to live in Cali so you make less comparatively) You make more as a doctor living in a rural area or you can do like me and live in ATL. You can really build wealth like no other.

I also attend a state school which ironically is one of the most expensive schools in the country (terribly backwards state government), and Im the only breh in my class. The chicks at AMEC in 2017 though :leon:.

I also need for financial counseling before I start residency. Especially since Im going in to Pediatrics and we don't get paid as much as other specialties.

I really hope we can increase the number of black men in medicine, so if anyone is interested and needs advice, don't hesitate to pm me.

Yeah I’m a physician I think ultimately more black people should go into it. There is a reason why Asian and Indians push there kids into it. Also you don’t work as many hours as you would think.

I work 13 shifts a month and make around 300k

I'm sorta :duck:.... :mjcry:

Well done if true.:wow:

If you have so much free time and money what are your investments like?

300k easy for what he does in EM, I know some who make more. Don't know how I didn't see this thread before, but I'm an MD as well, been out of residency for more than 5 years. I'm an internist/hospitalist and work ~ 15-17 shifts a month on a 7 on/7 off schedule and pull in about 300+k as well after some small bonuses come into play. We definitely need more brothers and sisters in this field.

I’m currently working in biotech and debating going back to school for medicine physical therapy or DO . I’m 30. any advice ?

I'm making a career change and am heading back to school for a bs. Looking into getting clinical research on the genetics side. Any advice?

Ah okay, I'm currently in graduate school and I am thinking about leaving this to actually just do medicine solely because man working in a lab is not the wave for me. Ironically I am an excellent thinker and can independently plan experiments and shyt but this is not for me. I ask about biotech because I am thinking about taking some time off and was always curious about maybe entering biotech for some time and curious what degrees they get. Not to get in your business but where are you located? I'm in Silicon Valley so biotech is galore out here.

I love the lab atmosphere and that's ultimately where I want to be. I also am an independent thinker and have done my own experiments outside of schooling. That freedom is taken away when the company wants a certain focus. Did you find that compromise made you want to switch?

Im an older student. :flabbynsick:

I guess I'm young still, early twenties, what age are you going to be finishing?

By the time I'm finished I'll be touching 32.

There are clinical research interships at universities check out the ones at your school or in your area look into biotech concentrations

I have a question.

I have a friend who's dad is an internist and has his own clinic. He's allowing me to observe and participate with him for a few months twice a week. Does this count under shadowing or clinical experience?

And also, I'm planning on getting a scribing job, but on ScribeAmerica they keep saying over a year of experience is required such as in medical terminology. But where do I get the experience first?

The thing about experience is that you have to be able to express why it has supported your decision to go into medicine. Try not to focus too much on how much shadowing vs clinic experience but more so on the quality of that experience. From the sound of it this may fall more in line with shadowing experience. With that said, it would be great if he can get you involved in the some of the clinical aspects even if it’s just taking vitals. You can also get more of a clinical experience through working at free clinics. Again approach all experiences with the mindset of how does this make me a better medical student/doctor and how does it show that I am committed to medicine.

I will certainly keep all of this noted. Thank you.

The politics. There is room for growth but it’s a very cut throat field. I have my bs in bio and feel like I should take a chance . Selling myself short otherwise i like the idea of taking care of patients more so than sitting in a lab wondering where the medicine we are making is going
Have you decided to pursue this? I am in similar position at the moment and thinking about switching to medicine. I currently have a business degree.
