If you talk to someone a little bit you can figure out if they are a degenerate or not.

I would guess this person showed signs of being mean and selfish before you met up but you probably shrugged it off.

Next attempt: talk to them long enough to figure out if they are sane. If they are not, then stay out the way.

Like someone said: you prolly seek a certain type of guy and overlook the less attractive (poorer, less whatever) but nice guy. So check that.
