This is just another case of how mandatory minimums are awful and prosecutors are sacks of shyt.
If politicians didn't create these idiotic mandatory minimum laws to show how "tough on crime" they are with very little thought being given to the fact that the criminal justice system is not a one size fits all system. And prosecutors give less than half a damn about the people that come before them and even less about justice. All they exist to do is get wins in the hopes of advancing their careers and if it destroys lives they don't give a damn because that W gets them closer to winning an elected office in the future.
