Russia: Funeral home criticised for pensioner tea party

The women told Russian media they had been expecting to go on a tour of the city
Pensioners who helped the Russian war effort against Nazi Germany have been treated to a party - at a funeral home.

The group of about 50 elderly women thought they were going on a city tour in Yekaterinburg, but instead found themselves at a tea party surrounded by coffins, headstones and funeral wreaths, state-owned Channel One TV reports. The event was ostensibly a celebration in advance of Victory Day, held on 9 May in Russia. But the women were also slipped business cards with the funeral home's contact details. While some took it in their stride, others were upset. "This is horrible - I was in such shock that I wasn't even able to attend Saturday of Souls," Yevgeniya Vyatkina says, referring to the Orthodox day for commemorating the dead. "I still have some life ahead of me, it's too early to go to a funeral parlour."

Displeased local people have sounded off about the event on the Yekaterinburg Online site. "Apart from a funeral flower, our grandmother was presented with a flyer containing telephone numbers to call if 'something' happens, a price list and instructions on how to get a loan for funerals," says one person. Another thinks the fact it was pitched as a Victory Day celebration is "disrespectful". But the funeral home's director doesn't see the problem. He says they've held similar tea parties before, and he thinks the business has successfully combined charity with advertising.

It looks like France might actually cancel Russia's $1.3 billion Mistral warship order

REVEALED: Russia's top secret tank

YEREVAN/PARIS (Reuters) - No decision has yet been taken on the future of France's suspended contract to deliver Mistral helicopter carriers to Russia, French President Francois Hollande said on Friday after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"As far as the Mistral is concerned I have set the terms. Either the Mistral is delivered, which is not our decision as of today, or a repayment will be made in the form we have discussed," Hollande said at a news conference after the meeting in Yerevan, Armenia.

Separately, Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron told Reuters in Paris the French government would make sure the companies and workers involved were not affected.

"Technically we are ready so that this decision, if it is taken, will not damage the companies and workers involved," he said.

Earlier on Friday a Russian source close to the talks said Russia and France were close to an agreement for Paristo cancel the contract and reimburse Moscow.

The DCNS unit of Thales, 26 percent owned by the French state and 25 percent by Dassault Aviation, is a prime contractor on the Mistral.

France suspended the delivery of the warships last year after the European Union decided to impose sanctions on Russia over the separatist conflict in neighboring Ukraine.

French President Francois Hollande, who was holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Friday, suggested on Wednesday that Paris could cancel the contract and reimburse Moscow.

Putin had said the previous week that Moscow would not impose penalties on France over the 1.2 billion euro ($1.29 billion) deal if all costs incurred by Russia were reimbursed.

Referring to the statement Hollande made on Wednesday, the Russian source close to talks said: "We value this declaration very highly."

The source said Hollande had proposed an "acceptable" solution and that France would be able to "save face" but declined to give more details of the proposed solution.

Putin and Hollande were meeting on the sidelines of ceremonies marking the centenary of a mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

Ties between Moscow and the West are at their lowest in decades over Ukraine, where Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula last year and is accused by the West of providing separatists in the east of the country with weapons, troops, intelligence and training.

Putin Starts Off Morning By Sitting Down To Write The Day’s News

MOSCOW—Saying he can’t imagine beginning his day without the pages spread out on his kitchen table, Russian president Vladimir Putin told reporters Thursday that he starts off each morning by sitting down to write the day’s news. “Every day before I go to work, I like to come downstairs, have a cup of coffee, and jot down some stories for my state-run media outlets,” said the Russian leader, adding that he occasionally only has time to scribble the front-page headlines when he’s in a hurry. “I typically start off writing whatever the big national and political news should be and then maybe work my way over to smaller stuff. As an autocratic ruler, I just think it’s my responsibility to manipulate what’s going on in the world.” Putin went on to say that he always looks forward to spending hours really sinking his teeth into manufacturing the news on Sundays.

Russia: Red faces over Luftwaffe poster gaffe

The billboard was meant to celebrate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany
A Russian mayor has apologised after a billboard celebrating the Soviet victory in World War Two appeared on the streets of his town - adorned with a picture of a Nazi air force crew.

The signs appeared around the town of Ivanteyevka, just outside Moscow, ahead of Russia's Victory Day anniversary on 9 May. But it didn't take long for someone to notice that the troops featured weren't Soviet airmen, but a Luftwaffe bomber crew. The town's mayor, Sergei Gridnev says local people, war veterans and the whole of Russia can rest assured that he'll punish those responsible for the "appalling incident", the state news agency Tass reports. The local branch of the pro-Putin All-Russia People's Front says it spotted the billboard and demanded its removal, and 12 hours after it went up the offending image came right back down again.

The local news portal Ivanteyevka Today has since owned up to the gaffe. It commissioned 20 banners to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the war, but confessed to "negligence" in choosing the photo, which was rather unfortunately emblazoned with the words: "They fought for the Motherland". The site does point out that the photo dates from 1940, a year before Germany attacked the Soviet Union, although this hasn't won it much sympathy among MPs and officials.

Russia jails three women over twerking video at WW2 memorial
  • 26 April 2015

A Russian court has jailed three women for performing a twerking dance in front of a World War Two memorial.

The court in Novorossiysk gave two of the dancers 10 days in jail each, a third 15 days and two others received fines on charges of petty hooliganism.

Prosecutors had said their "erotic and sexual twerk dance" was disrespectful to historic memory and unacceptable.

Earlier this month, Russian officials closed a dance school after a similar dance video emerged on the internet.

The latest incident involves six dancers - one of them a minor who was not convicted - who had posted a video on YouTube.

"This incident of disrespect for the memory of war history is unacceptable and any attempts to desecrate sites of military glory will be stopped immediately," prosecutors said.

The Orenburg dance school video has been a huge YouTube hit
The sentences come as Russia prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of the World War Two victory.

They also follow the incident early in April when a video clip from the Orenburg dance school on YouTube was viewed millions of times.

The video clip, entitled Winnie the Pooh and the Bees, showed a group of teenage girls dancing on stage in striped leotards, long socks and mini-skirts,

They perform hip-thrusting moves characteristic of twerking.

A committee is investigating whether the performance amounts to negligence or even "debauched action", which is punishable by a range of sanctions from community service to three years behind bars.

North Korean leader 'will not attend Russia WW2 events'

_82670921_026986108-1.jpg

Kim Jong-un has not made any overseas visits since taking power in North Korea in late 2011
Russia says North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will now not attend Moscow's World War Two commemorations despite claims he had accepted an invitation.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Mr Kim had decided to stay in North Korea due to "internal issues".

It follows reports that Mr Kim recently ordered the execution of 15 people, including several top officials.

The trip would have been his first overseas visit since taking power in North Korea in late 2011.

The Kremlin said in January his presence at the WW2 anniversary celebrations in Moscow in May had been confirmed - but North Korea never gave an official statement.

On Wednesday, Mr Peskov told reporters that Mr Kim would not be attending after all.

Criticism over Ukraine
It is 70 years since the Soviet and Allied armies defeated Nazi Germany in 1945.

The Russian government has sent dozens of invitations to foreign leaders to its commemorative events.

But many will stay away from the 9 May Victory Day parade amid criticism over the country's actions in eastern Ukraine.

Chinese and Greek leaders are expected to attend.

Meanwhile the Czech President Milos Zeman and Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico have said they will take part in Moscow's commemorations, but skip the military parade.

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel will not be there for 9 May, but will visit the following day.

'Spies executed'
Observers had said that if Kim Jong-un chose to visit Moscow, before having visited Beijing, it could have been seen as a sign of growing distance between China and North Korea.

Kim Jong-un's father Kim Jong-il, the former leader who died in December 2011, visited Russia in August 2011, but paid more regular visits to China, which is seen as the North's closest ally.

His visits were never announced ahead of his departure.

South Korean intelligence officials said on Tuesday that 15 people, including several top officials, had been executed in North Korea on spying charges this year.

Those killed included two vice ministers who challenged Mr Kim over his policies and members of an orchestra, they said.

Russian spacecraft Progress M-27M 'out of control'

Media captionNasa released footage showing the spaceship spinning
A Russian spacecraft delivering supplies to the International Space Station (ISS) is out of control and will fall back to Earth, officials say.

The unmanned cargo ship was launched from Kazakhstan on Tuesday, but contact was lost with it soon afterwards.

Russia's space agency says Progress M-27M is now orbiting in an uncontrolled spin.

It cannot reach the ISS and is likely to break up on re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

The craft carried on to a higher orbit after contact was lost.

Igor Komarov, the head of Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, said: "The craft's continued flight and its docking with the ISS is not possible."

One astronaut on board the ISS said Progress would burn up in Earth's atmosphere
Two astronauts spending a year on the ISS, Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko, told the Associated Press news agency that flight controllers had given up hope of controlling Progress again.

Progress is likely to re-enter Earth's atmosphere some time between 5 and 7 May.

Other capsules - including one Progress craft last year - have burned up and disintegrated on re-entering Earth's atmosphere without posing a threat to the planet's population.

The Progress M-27M cargo ship launched from Kazakhstan on Tuesday but is now out of control
Cathleen Lewis, a specialist in Russian space programmes at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, said it was not yet known where debris will fall - but that it was highly unlikely to hit urban areas.

"I always remind people that two-thirds of Earth's surface is water," she said.

"The likelihood of it coming down and hitting someone is so remote as to be miniscule."

_75306515_line976.jpg

Jonathan Amos, Science Correspondent
The problem with the loss of the Progress is that it puts further pressure on the volume of stores held on the space station.

ISS managers like to keep a good six months' supply of food, water, fuel and other resources in reserve at all times.

Currently, however, this volume is somewhat depleted - in part because of the explosion on launch last year of the American Cygnus freighter.

The responsibility for keeping the stores topped up leans heavily on Progress and the second American freighter, Dragon. The latter is due to make its next supply run in June.

As long as it keeps working well, ISS officials in Houston and Moscow will not be unduly concerned.

If, for some reason, supplies did become marginal, the space agencies would simply reduce the size of the normal six-person crew until matters could be improved.

_82649791_82649790.jpg

Mission control in Russia is still hoping to make contact with the Progress M-27M cargo ship
Progress was to deliver food, water, fuel, oxygen and clothing to the crew of six people on the space station that orbits about 420km (250 miles) above Earth.

Even after Progress' loss, the astronauts have enough supplies to keep them going until the next expected delivery on 19 June.

A Roscosmos spokesman told Reuters that the loss was valued at 2.59 billion roubles ($50.7m, £32.9m).
