Two alcoholic Russian bears who were kept in appalling conditions for more than 20 years could soon be enjoying a new life in Romania.

In February, a court ruled that the male bears must be confiscated from their owner, who kept them in a small, rubbish-strewn cage at a restaurant in the Black Sea city of Sochi. The animals - one of which is blind - became addicted to alcohol after visitors continually gave them drinks, the Tass news agency reports. While the removal order comes into effect in March, they're currently still living with the owner, and need travel paperwork to be issued by the Sochi authorities. "The court order is there to take them away but there is nowhere to put them in Sochi," says Anna Kogan, head of the Big Hearts Foundation, which is coordinating the move with support from other animal charities. A bear sanctuary in Romania has now offered to re-home the bears and provide them with treatment for their alcohol problems.

"It's a very expensive process to move them abroad," Ms Kogan tells the BBC, adding that the foundation is still looking for logistical help to transport the bears by boat across the Black Sea. But if they make it to their new home, their chances of recovery are good. "The people there have worked with dancing bears who had similar problems... it can be done," Ms Kogan says. The restaurant owner previously defended keeping the bears, arguing that beer was good for them because of the climate.

A major Russian opposition figure was just shot dead in Moscow

There's a chilling quote from 1997 about the opposition leader in Moscow who was shot dead

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday condemned the "brutal murder" of Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, and called for a full investigation into the killing.

"The United States condemns the brutal murder of Boris Nemtsov, and we call upon the Russian government to conduct a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his murder and ensure that those responsible for this vicious killing are brought to justice," Obama said in a statement.

Obama met Nemtsov during a 2009 trip to Moscow, where he held talks with opposition parties after a meeting with then-President Dmitry Medvedev. Obama said he admired Nemtsov's "courageous dedication to the struggle against corruption in Russia."

With Nemtsov's death, Obama said, Russians have lost "one of the most dedicated and eloquent defenders of their rights."

"Nemtsov was a tireless advocate for his country, seeking for his fellow Russian citizens the rights to which all people are entitled," Obama said.

Russians to Spend More Than Half of Their Income on Food

Soaring inflation and a reduction in real wages could have Russians spend half of their income on food by the end of this year, a news report said Monday.

A survey of Russian retail prices by VTB Capital cited by business daily Vedomosti predicted spending on food could account for between 50-55 percent of household income by the end of 2015, up from 40 percent last year.

Inflation and a reduction in real wages, linked to the devaluation of the ruble, are to blame for the predicted hike in food expenditure, the report said.

The ruble has been hit hard by a global drop in the price of oil and Western sanctions against Moscow for its involvement in Ukraine.

Inflation on food products hit a high of up to 22 percent in February, but this figure is expected to stabilize in the second quarter and will hover around 9.6 percent by the end of 2015, Vedomosti cited the VTB analysts as saying.

Food price inflation has been compounded by a drop in the value of Russians' real wages, which are expected to decrease 6.8 percent year-on-year by the end of 2015, the report added.

It Is a Government Crime': The Coffins of Russia's Ghost Soldiers In Ukraine Are Coming Home

By Lucy Kafanov

March 3, 2015 | 5:49 am
At half past six in the morning, on September 2, a captain from Russia's 106th Guards Airborne Division arrived at the outskirts of a remote village in the Samara region, a triangular stretch of southern Russia between the Volga River and Kazakhstan. He had been driving through the countryside for hours. Seemingly endless rows of birch trees eventually gave way to flat stretches of farmland, until a signpost beside a small cemetery announced the village of Podsolnechnoye. The vehicle bounced along a rutted road, past clusters of dilapidated single-story houses, and came to a stop in front of a modest white brick home.

The captain had travelled nearly 900 miles from Rostov, on the border with Ukraine, in order to make a personal delivery. With him was a sealed zinc coffin containing the body of a 20-year-old paratrooper named Sergei Andrianov.

Relatives were waiting to greet them outside. Sergei's older brother and uncle stepped forward with an angle grinder and set about opening the coffin. His mother Natasha remained inside the home. "I was hoping there was a mistake," she told VICE News. "They took so long to bring him, I thought maybe he was wounded and they were treating him." Outside, the men managed to pry open the coffin. Natasha heard her daughter begin to scream.

Russians have seen the cost of basic foodstuffs soar in recent months

Pensioners in a Russian city will be offered free bread every week in response to economic turmoil in the country, it's reported.

A bakery in the central Siberian city of Tomsk says it will give away 60 loaves at two local markets every Saturday and on public holidays, the Lenta.ru news website reports. The initiative is due to begin on 7 March, and a city government statement hailing the plan said it would help "vulnerable people in difficult economic conditions", but it was subsequently taken down. "We support such initiatives," Mayor Ivan Klyayn was quoted as saying. "All entrepreneurs must understand that the current increase in food prices now often makes it impossible for people with low income and pensioners to buy basic foodstuffs."

The cost of many basic food items has soared in Russia during the past year - in part caused by Russian counter-sanctions banning food imports from Western countries and a sharp fall in the rouble's value. Fruit and vegetable prices rose by 40% in the year to January, and consumers have seen a significant rise in the cost of eggs, pasta and cereals.

There was some support for the idea on Russian social media, with one person tweeting that it was "good thing to do". Others were sceptical, however. "When will this country stop humiliating its people? Never," says a popular satirical Twitter commentator. Another user dryly remarked: "I wanted to spend my sunset years in Costa Rica but Tomsk has clearly become a cooler option."
