I said it sometime ago, that black folks/kids weren't watching DBZ when I was young in the mid 90s and early 2000s. I was the only nikka I knew watching it. when I wanted to discuss DBZ topics, it was with 2 cac mexican kids. but that was the only anime I watched though.:whoa: I still don't fukk with that genre at all
Speak for yourself. Brehs were watching Fist of the North Star, Violence Jack, Devilman, Guyver, Legend of the Overfiend, Full Metal Alchemist, Ninja Scroll.

In fact, I was kinda disappointed with DBZ with its 10 episodes powering up before throwing a punch.

It speaks to the lack of variety and interesting messaging in American media. A lot of shows these days usually follow one of these formats:
1.unrealistically good looking people competing to date eachother.
2. Law enforcement tracking down unrealistically sophisticated crime networks
3. Doctors and nurses treating exotic diseases
4. A weak adaptation of a work made several years ago.
5. Chuck Lorre style sitcoms.
6. Poorly animated family cartoons.

And they usually have pretty forgettable protagonists and characters that get killed off just as people are starting to like them.

Anime is more relatable to an audience that's gotten tired of seeing the same kinds of things. Its part of the reason the marvel products are so popular too. They have characters who are flawed and suffer setbacks but keep persevering until they win like captain america, thor, or Spiderman. Its part of the reason pro wrestling is still popular(might even argue MORE now because people can watch all sorts of wrestling promotions)

People want to see characters take Ls and grow from them in new and creative ways or characters who develop substantial friendships. A lot of anime is like that.

A very classic cartoon example is my nikka Zuko from ATLA :wow:

Short of the boondocks i cant think of many, if any black cartoons. boondocks couldve had a simpsons-like run man, its too bad the creator wasnt about that life.

The Proud Family (the OG one not the new joint)
The PJ’s
Bebe Kids
Yasuke
The Boondocks

Those are the main ones I can think of right now

Avatar is an American cartoon made by people who watch anime and unsurprisingly its got a HUGE following. People fukk with the storyline and character archetypes in anime and Disney knows this on some level which is why these marvel movies getting people to break off hundreds of dollars a year.

Steve Rogers vs Bucky in winter soldier was basically naruto vs Sasuke.

Izuku from hero academia is basically Peter Parker.

Thanos was like aizen from bleach.

Thor has basically become vegeta from dragon ball mixed with Goku's personality.

Its no surprise marvel has even gotten anime studios to make x men and black widow movies. Comics, anime and manga are also very personal works. You can see the author more intensely in the work than a lot of the other products out there where its very obvious there was a ton of focus testing done to create the show.

I think we will start seeing more good adaptations of anime in the future. It will take a while but we will eventually get an actually good ghost in the shell adaptation or someone will do a good psycho pass or Tokyo revengers adaptation. Tokyo revengers would be extremely easy to adapt to America. Set it in NY and diversify the cast and you're good to go.
