The war torn country is home to a vigorous population of snow leopards. The World Conservation Society recently laid a number of camera traps in the Wakhan Corridor. This mountainous area is a long panhandle in the north east of the country and the camera traps captured snow leopards on film in sixteen places.

This is a remarkable turn out of events as it has been estimated that there are only around seven thousand snow leopards in the world, scattered across a dozen countries in Central Asia. Their habitat is usually over 10,000 feet above sea level but even at these heights snow leopards are often killed by shepherds for harrying their flocks.

That isn’t the last of their worries either. Many of these fuzzy-tailed felines are caught and sold by the illegal pet trade. Then there is the Chinese problem. Their bones and penises are in high demand by the bourgeoning middle classes of China. It is believed that ingestion of their body parts increase sexual performance in humans.

Panthera uncial is considered one of the most endangered of the big cats. Their numbers have fallen by twenty percent over the last twenty years. You do not need to be Einstein to calculate that the species does not have long unless something is done.

The goal of the World Conservation Society is to make sure that these wonderful beasts have are protected and have a future in Afghanistan. A reservation has been proposed by the society so that the snow leopards of the Wakhan Corridor, which has borders on Tajikistan, Pakistan and – oh dear – China, can be legally and forcefully protected.

Although it has always been known that snow leopards inhabit this remote part of Afghanistan there was concern that the population had been severely depleted. As the wars of the last thirty years have impoverished the population it was thought that their patience with a predatory big cat, however endangered, would precipitate wider hunting.

This it seems has not been the case. Fortunately the Wakhan Corridor is one of the few places in Afghanistan which has been troubled by insurgency and civil unrest.

Yet there is a lot of work to be done. At the moment the society is doing its best to train rangers and provide education around conservation. Other help has been to provide locals with corrals which are predator-proof and to start up a compensation scheme to reimburse farmers whose stock is predated by the leopards.

Dramatic Pictures Show Warthog Mother Fighting with Leopard to Save Her Baby

So what happens when a leopard grabs a piglet? The mother warthog charges and sends the leopard flying in the air making it lose its grip on the baby warthog. Seems unusual? This is exactly what happened a few days back at the Kruger National Park in South Africa and dramatic pictures of this incident was captured by Koos Fourie.

As the pictures show, the warthog won the battle and successfully saved her baby from the leopard’s jaws. The images were captured while Koos Fourie was on a safari at the park.

“We saw the three warthogs running in the road ahead of us.I decided to stop to take a picture of the warthogs. I parked my vehicle in the road, opened the window and focused on the biggest warthog” said Mr. Fourie.

He further added, “When I pushed the shutter of my camera I heard a noise and thought it was the piglets fighting with one another. But it was a leopard who had appeared from nowhere and caught one of the warthog piglets. The leopard was trying to pin her potential kill to the ground and the piglet was screaming and kicking to try and get away from the leopard. The next moment, the mother came running back from behind my vehicle at full speed dropping her head and hit the leopard in the rib cage.”

The warthog mother charged the leopard for the second time and made the leopard lose its grip on the baby warthog. Even more courageous was the fact that the warthog mother chased the leopard away from her baby.

“There was also a lesson from nature for me where we witnessed the care of a mother for her baby. She has put her own life at risk to save her baby’s life and this made me decide to call the event ‘fight for life”, said Mr. Fourie summing up the whole sequence.

Repped.

Sloth bears are known to be very aggressive and to always give a tiger a hard time. I must say I am surprised the mother bear won as the male tiger had a sizable advantage and drew blood. At the same time, the tiger took some major claws to the body and face as well as some bites.

5 star video!

fyi, sloth bears, while smaller than their North American cousins, are no joke

Astonishing Animal Facts
1. Clams are complicated. They can change gender once during their lifetime, right after their juvenile stage, but only from male to female. Many other mollusks are either hermaphroditic or have the ability to change sex.

2. Jewel wasps should consider starring in a horror movie. Jewel wasps (or emerald cockroach wasps) employ a creepy procedure to lay their eggs. They first inject a venomous cocktail into the brains of cockroaches, manipulating their decision-making process and rendering them zombies. The cockroaches become unable to move on their own and will follow the wasps’ “orders.” The wasps then lay an egg on the cockroaches’ legs, and after the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the roaches’ internal organs for several days.

3. Whales trap prey by blowing bubbles. Humpback whales engage in “bubble net feeding” by forming a circle and blowing bubbles beneath a school of prey fish. They gradually make the circle tighter, while a second group goes below the prey to push them to the surface and a third group makes a sound that is intended to concentrate the fish. Now that’s what I call teamwork!

4. Ants are skilled farmers. Evidence suggests that ants developed agriculture as early as 70 million years ago in the early Tertiary Period. They grow mushrooms to feed their colonies, which require a sophisticated system of 2,000 chambers, vents, and tunnels to control humidity and temperature, and they secrete chemicals with antibiotic properties in order to inhibit mold growth.

5. Little brown bats know how to “chill.” While hibernating, little brown bats can reduce their heart rate from 200 to 20 beats per minute and can even stop breathing for approximately 45 minutes. This state of torpor, or regulated hypothermia, allows the bats to survive through periods of food scarcity and can last from a few hours to a few months.

6. Squirrels are deceptive. When squirrels know that they are being watched by potential thieves, they will pretend to bury an acorn while, in fact, concealing it in their mouth. Squirrel expert Dr. Michael A. Steele explains, “Deceptive caching involves some pretty serious decision making. It meets the criteria of tactical deception, which previously was thought to only occur in primates.”

7. Crocodiles can potentially live forever. “Senescence” is a term used to describe the gradual deterioration of the body because of aging. It occurs in humans but not in crocodiles. Crocs die only from disease, accidents, starvation, or predation. Sea urchins, lobsters, clams, tortoises, turtles, and alligators also do not age biologically. As crocodiles age, they continue to become bigger and require more food. When that amount of food is unavailable, they will often die from starvation.

8. Manta rays can weigh up to 3,000 pounds. That’s more than a Prius!

9. The migration of monarch butterflies takes longer than their life spans. These astonishing creatures migrate up to hundreds or even thousands of miles every year from Canada to Mexico, but individual butterflies do not make the entire round trip because of their short life spans. Even so, the swarms of butterflies always reach their destination! Scientists think they use the sun’s pathway to navigate.

Why don't you do some research yourself and see if they are.
? Some Reindeer migrate more than any other mammals - over 3,000 miles in a year.
? A Reindeer's nose warms the air it breathes before it gets to its lungs.
? Some Reindeer have knees that make a clicking sound when they walk. It helps them keep together in a blizzard.
? Some Turtles can breath out of their butts.
? The tongue of a Giraffe is so long it can lick inside its own ear.
? On average a Great White Shark has 300 teeth at any one time.
? Giraffes and humans have the same number of bones in their necks: 7
? A Tasmanian Devil's powerful jaw is three times stronger than the jaw of a Pit Bull Terrier. So if you see one don't muck with it
? Snails can't hear you. They don't have ears.
? Snakes can hear you. They have ears on the inside of their head.
? Snakes smell with their tongue.
? Cows kill more people than Sharks. About 10 humans are killed by Sharks every year but nearly 100 people die each year from being stepped on by cows.
? The brain of a cockroach is inside its body. If a roach loses its head it can still live for over a week, eventually dying because it can not eat.
? The Australian Barking Spider preys on small frogs and reptiles.
? Spiders have 8 legs and 48 knees.
? If a Copperhead snake loses a fang it can replace it with a spare. It has up to seven spare fangs.
? The longer a Copperhead snake is the longer its fangs are.
? Frogs sleep with their eyes open.
? It's hard to sneak up on a frog. They can see in all directions at once.
? Fear of frogs is know as Frog Phobia or Ranidaphobia
? A Shark's teeth are normally replaced every eight days.
? Man-eating sharks prefer to eat men. 13 males are bitten for every one female
? A Great White Shark can go without eating for up to three months.
? If you lift a Kangaroo's tail off the ground it can't hop.
? Penguins can jump 6 feet in the air.
? A group of Kangaroos is called a mob.
? A young Kangaroo is called a Joey.
? Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards.
? Beavers can hold their breathe for 45 minutes under water.
? The smallest bird in the world is the Humming Bird. It weighs less than 1 oz - 0.07 oz ( 2 grams).
? A bear can run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour (48 km/h).
? Elephants are the only animal that can't jump.
? Polar bears are left handed.
? A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out.
? A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.
? Tigers have striped skin not just striped fur.
? Reindeer eat moss because it contains a chemical that stops their body from freezing.
? The coyote's scientific name (Canis Latrans) means 'barking dog'.
? Snakes can see through their eyelids.
? A Woodpecker can peck 20 times per second.
? Woodpeckers don't get headaches from all that pecking. Their skulls have air pockets to cushion the brain.
? The praying mantis is the only insect that can turn its head 360 degrees.
? Butterflies tast sensors are in their feet. They taste their food by standing on it.
? Katydids have ears in their front legs.
? The strongest animal in the world is the rhinoceros beetle. It can lift 850 times its own weight.
? Flamingos are pink because shrimp is one of their main sources of food.
? The flying frog uses flaps of skin between its toes to glide.
? The slowest mammal on earth is the tree sloth. It only moves at a speed of 6 feet (1.83 meters) per minute.
? The Chameleon's tongue is as long as its body.
? The Chameleon can focus its eyes seperately to watch two objects at once.
? The Kangaroo's ancestors lived in trees. Today there are eight different kinds of tree kangaroos.
? Flamingos eat with their heads upside down to strain the water out of their food.
? Many snakes never stop growing. That's one reason they must shed their skin.
? The Artic Tern flies from the North Pole to the South Pole and then back again to spend summer in each place.
? The black bulldog ant from Australia is the most dangerous ant in the world. It stings and bites at the same time and has killed humans.
? A hippopotamus can stay under water for up to 30 minutes.
? The Basenji is the only dog which does not bark.
? Armadillos, opossums and sloths spend up to 80 percent of their lives sleeping.
? The Sun Bear has the longest tongue of all bear species - 20-25 centimetres (8 to 10 inches) long.
? If the Sun Bear is grabbed or bitten around its head, it can turn round inside the wrinkly skin on its head and bite the predator.
